Alt + X shortcut not allowing me to choose letter option

Does anyone know of why I am not able to choose the underlined letter when hitting alt-x which brings up the quick list of shortcuts? I was able to before and now it no longer allows it. I have to select w/the mouse. No huge deal but want things to be how they were. I 've also tried using Win 8's "refresh" to no avail. Thank you.

Hello Steve, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You should be able to press only the Alt key to see the underline letters to use with ALT + (Underlined letter).

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

I used to be able to just hit the letter. If I choose alt first, the choices all disappear. Very frustrating. This is on Win8 Pro/64-bit. Thanks. Hope you have another idea?

Yes, when you press and release only Alt to see the underlined letters, you should be able to just press the letter at that point.

I'll double check that and post results later. Thank you very much.

Just confirmed - I click alt-x, I get the menu of options w/an underlined letter. I cannot press/release the alt key as it all disappears. Hitting any letter does nothing at that point as you'd expect. Any further tips, please? Thanks.

How about when you only press and release Alt, then press the underlined letters you want to open?

This is almost certainly a silly question, but what does Alt-X actually do?
I know what <Windows>-X does in Windows 8, but what is Alt-X?
