    Microsoft Not Responding

After logging in, Windows will do next to nothing. Almost nothing will, including Microsoft conifg and pc settings (so I can't just reset to factory condition). Among the very few things that will open are libraries and control panel, libraries only responding long enough for me to select all my pictures folders in an attempt to copy them to my external (as soon as i highlight and right click the folders it quits responding) and control panel quits responding as soon as I try to select an option. Upon restarting it I will often get a pop up that says "Explorer.exe execution failed" and sometimes Microsoft will quit responding. This all happened after I restarted my computer after installing .Net Framework 4. I'm sorry for the somewhat sketchy explanation, but something like this has never happened to me before and I'm not sure how to really describe it. At this point I'm fine losing everything if there is a way around to do it, with pc settings not opening.

Try running sfc /scannow--either way it works, if any, as shown here.

If you want to save your stuff, download the Macrium WinPE .iso from my Skydrive. Burn this to a CD and boot with the CD. From there you can take an image of any or all partitions on your system. Those images are VHDs that you can mount (double click) in another PC and recover your files.

For operational details see here: Imaging with free Macrium - Windows 7 Forums

PS: If you have a live Linux CD laying around, you can save your data with that too. But that may be more complex if you are not used to Linux.

Do you have an install DVD or flash drive or a system repair disc? If so, then you may be able to run the command from whatever media you have. Here is a link on how to do so. Check out the tips section toward the end. The link does not refer to Win8 specifically, but I think it is likely to apply to this OS.

Once I was finally able to get a hold of an install disk for Win 8 w/ WMC everything appears to be back to normal. This is the second time in a week I've had problems with it (although the first time was no where near as bizarre as this) so I finally learned my lesson and made a restore point. Thanks for the help, everyone!

You are very welcome. How did you correct your problem with the install disk? Are you saying, in effect, that you ran sfc /scannow from the disc and fixed your problem. Sorry my original link did not work when you got there.

After reading all the posts above, I saw there were no instructions on using sfc /scannow in Windows 8.
Unless someone edited their post after I made this response...

To run sfc /scannow in Windows 8 see the following images--

It usually takes me 3 clicks on tiny image to get it bigger..............

    I noticed that.
    Hence my post.

I am grateful you clarified the situation.

I use the site you linked to sometimes.
    They have good information.

Why the CMD pinned to taskbar opens as Administrator I don't know.
    It just does.
