no viable alternative in desktop/laptop, and that is where winds 8 is worst.

Really? Ok then if you say so. I'd have thought Win 7, XP, Linux, OSX all could run on a laptop/desktop. I do actually run all of them (except XP now).

I run a few VMs on my Win 8 laptop for various things. I upgraded to 8 for FUN. Works for me. I like it more than 7 and it does anything I want.

You don't have to upgrade if you don't want to as far as I know. Unless your work insists on it suppose.

Perhaps I am missing something but does not the windows key give you the start menu? I know it is rather unfashionable but I really do prefer 8.

Mind you my work is 5250 so I'm living in the past clearly.

    Obviously, yes.
Yeah, that would have been a better way to pose it since that was the intent of the question anyway.

Anyway based on the numbers of the survey thus far, I see most have accepted the OS without the start menu. I wonder how that would have change had there been no options to install one (no 3rd party app or otherwise)?
The poll numbers do not so indicate IMO. At most you can conclude that if Win8 had a start menu from the factory, then a fair percent of respondents, at this point, would be no more inclined to accept Windows 8. And, there is the problem I noted in post #9. The wording of the poll apparently was changed during the poll. Thus, some are likely to have voted "no" given the original wording while they would have voted "yes" given the changed wording. The original wording did not preclude the use of a third-part start-menu substitute. Now it does.

Continuing, I can't understand why you now say "I wonder how that would have change had there been no options to install one (no 3rd party app or otherwise)? Your post #1 says "If Windows 8 had the start menu would you be more inclined to accept it? To clarify, if Windows 8 had a Start menu included from factory (no 3rd party apps)"

That why I voted no actually - you got my motivation exactly right. I'd rather there was but I can live without it.

Agreed. You are one of the ones for which no is the appropriate response.

I hardly ever used it but to push WinKey -> Right arrow -> Enter.

    Hardly anyone used it:

I accept it now, BUT, only because several 3rd party devs have created Orb apps to replace it, I think they should have kept it in there, it is a necessity. I even have Sidebar now. That Microsoft has allowed devs to make these programs, is a salute. Apple, when they make major changes to an OS, especially iOS, they block out user modifications, at least make it difficult to do it.

The worst thing Microsoft can do would be to totally remove the desktop from the PC. If they eventually manage to do this, it to Apple I will go.

So what happens if the new UI that replaces the Desktop in a very very long time from now is better than or equal to the Desktop?...

Somewhat skewed question, as I use 8 with classic shell, so it totally resembles the 7 desktop... except that I also use the taskbar from XP....

I come the "If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it" school of thought....clearly....

Obviously - that is why no one has even mentioned it for the last several months. It is also why all those start menu replacements aren't being used.

    I like better things.

Let us look forward to whatever it may be in many many years time. Perhaps we will be using thought control - who knows.

    This metro thing ain't it.

Good day, Just bought a new laptop (Lenovo Z510, with 8.1 pre-installed). Since the very first day I am having the issue that when I press the "Start Menu" Button, I have to wait about 2 minutes until the menu opens (no exaggeration) . This happens not only the first time after startup, but...

This poll is interesting to me, but it doesn't substantively or clearly get at what I'd most like to know in relation to having a desktop start menu and our proclivities to accept Windows 8 in a post-purchase, Windows 8 in-use environment. In conducting this poll, I am trying to get at the...

I wanted to take an informal poll to see how many of the Windows 8 users are using a 3rd party start menu? I would also like to gauge whether the same people would still use windows 8 without a start menu replacement. Edit: Any way to edit a poll?
