    My Problems with Windows 8

    I bought a brand new HP Pavilion g6 laptop runnning Windows 8 about 2 weeks ago. Since first starting it up, I've encountered quite a few problems which, to be honest, I'm not happy with, considering the laptop is brand new. It's not the computer's fault, the specs are fine: Intel Core i5 processor, 6GB ram, 1TB internal memory, etc. So I'm pretty sure it's the OS.

    Here's a few of the problems I've been having:
    1. Half of the time the apps on the start screen (the "tiles") don't work. They open to a brightly coloured screen, and after about two minutes they simply crash. This happens for all apps apart from "Desktop" (which isn't really an app).
    2. When I try and download a program, the installer or setup program won't open. It asks if I'd like to allow the program to make changes on my desktop etc, I click "Yes", and nothing happens. Double clicking the setup or installer doesn't work either. This has happened to me with only three programs I've tried to install so far (iTunes, Audacity and Skype). Running them as an administrator does nothing either.
    3. Occasionally, programs won't open, but they appear to be running in Task Manager, for example: Google Chrome, Minecraft. The only way to fix this is to turn the laptop off and then on again.
    4. Restarting doesn't work. It simply shows the restarting screen and the loader, and will stay there for hours if left alone. The only remedy to this is to hold the power button, which nobody likes doing.
    5. The "Photos" app/tile only displays certain photos (about 5% of all of my pictures/photos), no matter what format they're in.

    So those are all the problems I can think of at the moment, there are probably a few more minor ones which I can't remember. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Sounds like some major issues. Probably best to just start from scratch. That way if it still dosent work you will know its a hardware issue and can get it replaced. Or if you dont feel like messing with it just get an exchange, after all its brand new.

    Hmmmm. I would call HP and ask them to walk you though a full system restore. Kinda sounds like you don't have the right resolution set for the video. Metro will not work and even crash if the resolution is not at least 1024x768. But, I think out-of-the-box the resolution of ANY modern laptop should be at least 1024x768 if not higher. Unless you changed the resolution for whatever reason.

    Didn't change anything, just set the laptop up as instructed by the manual. And it took forever to boot. Update on the problem, just uninstalled the Skype app/tile, now when I go to the store it tells me I already have the app installed.

    What is this, I don't even.

    I would agree with cmlusco. Try a full system restore. Or try to do a reset of windows 8 from the settings panel. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, call HP Tech Support.

    Bring up the charms by pressing Win+C
    Choose Settings (gear icon)
    Choose Change PC Settings
    Choose General

    You can try Refresh your PC, which will keep your files intact but if that gives you problems as well, Choose remove everything and Reinstall Windows, which sets your PC to default factory settings.

    Agree. Sounds like a major system problem. Most of the things you're seeing should not be happening at-all. At this point it certainly does sound like it's the computer's fault. Win8 does have a few minor glitches here and there but your list suggests major component failure.

    Agreed. The OP seems to have gotten a faulty computer. Seanod5, I'd not mess around with it, get it returned for a new one ASAP. If it's a lemon to begin with, you're likely to have issues down the road.

    I refreshed the computer, and so far everything seems to be working fine, so I'll see how it goes for a while. If I experience any more problems I probably will take it back to the shop and see what they can do, but at the moment things seem to be working fine again. Thanks for your help
