    New to windows 8, and...

Okay, I have been using a mac for about two years. Got it for college. Finally, I convinced my father that it wasn't what I needed, and told him I needed a pc with windows 7. Unfortunately, no new computer came with 7 and buying it was out of our price range. Two days ago I got a Toshiba with Windows 8 on it. I'm finding it hard to get used to and have, uh...a lot of questions.

Being in the board it is, I'll leave my technical question here. Every time I start the computer up it loads just fine; upon entering the desktop I usually have about 10-30 second before the arrow freezes. Without fail. I don't know how to fix this. It didn't start out that way, but only in the past day it's been doing this. It's another problem that is making me want to go back to apple. (And trust me, I HATE apple.) Help please? Everything is in it's default state aside from changing a default picture program. And the thing itself is less than a week old.

    Hi,

I think that the problem you are having is one that no one can figure out how to correct. It not that people are not trying to help.

Here are a couple of ideas:

    1) If your system is freezing up, and you are unable to do anything then you may need to reinstall the OS. This can be done by pressing a specific key at startup of the laptop. In some cases holding down the "Esc" key will bring up a menu so you can decide what needs to be done.

    2) Contact the manufacture to see if they can help you. Hopefully if this is the case they won't be charging you a phone fee (usually within the first ninety days this is free).

    3) Return the laptop and see if you can exchange it for another (but same model), or for a different model (same price range).

BTW, "Welcome to the Eight Forums." . . .

My understanding is that it is possible with a Windows 8 licence to revert back to Windows 7. But that might not be the ideal solution. It really is difficult to figure out what's going on under the circumstances. First off, can you use the 'start menu' ie tiles/apps in Windows 8? If you can, then that's a start to solving your problem. Let us know.

Strongly support the approach that Lee suggested.

This is a new machine and, at least for some time period, you should be able to get support from Toshiba for free.

I would ask them what would be involved in doing a refresh. It's a simple thing to do, and given you've only had it a short time, you won't lose much doing that.

If a refresh doesn't fix the freezing, then a return is definitely in order.

Do you mean the mouse pointer will just freeze up for 10-30 seconds AFTER going into the Desktop or just on the Start Screen? Methinks a Synaptics driver might be a fault.

If you can do so, I'd back up my files and try to get back to factory fresh. What restoration to factory fresh medium does Toshiba use on your machine? For example, did your machine come with a recovery partition? Or, did Toshiba provide instructions such as those mentioned in my sig? You could call Toshiba support for help on this matter. And, you could search on the Toshiba site for your computer model/manual/other pertinent instructions. Also, do you have any instructions in a file on your machine or printed instructions that might indicate how you should get back to factory fresh?

You also could try a system restore back to your earliest restore point--assuming system restore is configured. Presumably you would have to be fast to get this done before freezing occurs--unless you have a system repair disc.

Could be a hardware failure. I would try restarting, entering BIOS and let the computer run for about 5-10 minutes and see if you can still navigate through the BIOS selections. If it freezes in BIOS then you likely have a hardware failure. You can test this out in just a few minutes. I would try it before any reinstalls.
