Hello, I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 and ever since then I get a screen at reboot or start up that's a American Megatrends screen and its saying my HDD is bad and I need to backup and replace. I go into my HDD C: and do a "Check drive for for system errors" and it say its fine. Now, let me start from the beginning.....

When I first upgraded it installed fine ect and after the install of updates it rebooted and this is when i get the first glims of the American Megatrends screen. My PC was running so slow and freezing ect and finally I got the blue screen and that's all it would do every time I tried to restart it and I didn't get a chance to backup anything what so ever. I called MS and they wanted me to DL the copy again onto the PC I was using and burn the ISO image to a DVD and boot from it. I did what they said but here is the kicker...

The PC I was on was a 64-bit PC and I thought the other PC was a 32-bit and with the new Windows 8 it auto decides for you  . so what i did was downloaded the copy for the 64-bit on that PC (Just for kicks) and I had a desktop PC at the house as well and I know its a 32-bit so I DL a copy using that machine for the copy I was going to use to re install or try to fix the PC with. Long story short..

It allowed me to boot from DVD and I re installed the Win8 32-bit copy and it installed but I still get the American Megatrends screen saying I got a bad HD hit F1 to go on.

Now for some reason my PC is running WAY better so I went into the control panel system and it says:

System Type: 32-bit Operating system, x64-based processor

My question is why am i getting the American Megatrends screen and did the Windows 8 screw up my HDD? Also, do you think I need a new HDD..

Thanks!!

American Megatrends is your computers BIOS. Some BIOS's have SMART capability, which reads special information from the hard drive that monitors the health of that drive.

In reality, this probably has nothing to do with Windows 8. It may be that it's just a coincidence. Those do happen... A small child hits the fence with a stick and at the exact same moment lightning flashes in the sky...
