    Resizing photos

I used to use Picasa to resize photos when I used Vista. From what I've read, Picasa and Windows 8 are not compatible. I'm looking for a way to resize photos that is free. Can I do it with what is already in Windows 8 or do I need to download software? One possibility seems to be pic resize, but I'm open to suggestions.

Adobe is offering Photoshop CS2 free to everyone who creates an Adobe account (which is free). Overkill yes, but worth it.

You can resize images in MS Paint, which is part of Windows 8 (although pretty basic). Or you can download Windows Photo Gallery for free, which is part of the Windows Essentials software suite. There are also quite a few other freeware alternatives out there.

Technically, you can download Photoshop CS2 as another poster mentioned (and it is over-kill for what you want it for), but it's worth mentioning that it's intended for people who already have a valid licence, so it's not actually free (as it was originally reported). More info here:

    Good. That was expected.

I use GIMP (free) and works on Win8 as well:

did you try Microsoft's Photo Gallery? It's part of Windows Essentials, a free download.

I used to be a big fan of Picasa but have since switched. The reason is Picasa doesn't change enough of the metadata for the photos. So when I lost the database, I lost all that work I did for tagging people (work over thousands of pictures, gone). The first time I lost the database, I started over. The second time? I started looking for alternatives.

But with Photo Gallery, if you lose the database, it's very easy to get up and running again. While the photo recognition isn't as good as Picasa, it has some really nice features and touches. Plus, I love the panorama feature. It works really really well.

here's a panorama I made with a very basic camera:

Gimp is way too complex for most people, and has a terrible interface. And that's saying something, since Photoshop's interface is terrible as well.

A much better choice for most people is Paint.net

Paint.NET - Free Software for Digital Photo Editing

It's got all the features most people need, a much simpler and better interface, and free.

Hmm.. Well, technically the word is "may not" not "can't", because obviously you can. It's just not legal to do so unless you own a license to CS2 already.

If adobe were really concerned, they would have removed the download and activation codes from open access to anyone who registers an account. They would instead, verify their CS2 license. Something they can't be bothered to do. And they would have an official press release and statement about it, which they don't.

This is basically like the old Netscape Navigator. You were "supposed" to buy it, but you could download it directly from their website without paying for it. Few people paid for it.
