Can you take an icon from an existing file?

Is there any way to take the icon from one file and use it for another? For example, if I create a "File Explorer" shortcut to a PDF file so I can pin it to the taskbar or start screen, I'd like to remove the File Explorer icon from it and use the PDF icon that Adobe Reader uses. But I don't think it's included in the icon files available.

Right click on the shortcut->Properties->Change Icon then click on browse. Browse to the folder where the Acrobat Reader is located and select the executable file then click OK

The "Change Icon" dialog box won't let me browse in a folder. I can only browse in an "icon file" such as
C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll
or
C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll

Try extracting the .ico you want from acrobat executable.

Then see if you can browse to it.

I assume you mean the C:\Program Files(x86)\Adobe folder? There are almost 200 files in it, including a lot of .dll files. One of them may contain the .ico file, but I can't find it. What do you mean by "extract"?

C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll
or
C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll

With the open dialog, you should be able to browse the following file types: .ico, .dll, .exe, .icl

The executable of Adobe Reader should be in folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 11.0\Acrobat

First you have to browse to the folder above and look for a file that has an icon shown and select that file. It can be .dll or ,exe file.

Thanks. The icon I wanted was actually a different one. I found it by searching drive C for all .ico files.
It's called "PDFFile_8.ico" and it's in a folder called
C:\Windows\Installer\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-AB0000000001}
Maybe the guys at Adobe are trying to make sure nobody will ever find it! ;)

They both contain various sizes.
As long as they are for your own personal use it's ok.

Hi Dragon,

There are loads of website that deal with Icons (Icon Factory, etc). Go to Google/Bing and type in free icons then you will be given a crap load of sites. At present I have about two-thousand icons I have downloaded over the years.

Try extracting the .ico you want from acrobat executable.

Then see if you can browse to it.

No need to: you simply point instead of shell32 to the acrobat/reader executable. It has icons within.

You can zip the file and attach the archive.
I use the MicroAngelo Toolset 6 to manage all my icon stuff.

Their site: Home of Microangelo: The Grand Daddy of Icon Software

I've been a customer of theirs since the early windows versions.

It can explore your system for icons inside of just about everything and you can create your own as well.

For example, here is an animated rotating earth globe (Earth.zip attached) I made that I use for my 'busy' icon:

Speaking of cursors, I made a thread about that a while back. If you're interested, take a look, and you can post some cursors there if you like. :)

I might give the trial of Microangelo a go.
