For two days i have been trying to get windows 8 up and running and it would seem that Microsoft has really taken another step backwards,by not only making false promises, but more importantly not testing their product before release, it is doing their image no good on upsetting the users of their product. BUT AT LAST I HAVE FOUND ONE PROBLEM THAT I HAVE SOLVED OF KB2770917 AS A THIRD PARTY LICENSING TO M/S .the way to directly solve it is just go directly NALPEIRON LICENSING SERVICES FOR THE UPDATE PATCH. But now trying to load windows media center is going to be another mission i got the key and downloaded and guess what. i received FAILURE UPGRADING WINDOWS. Seriously do you think that m/s would refund my two copies of windows 8 pro. I can see the tell tale signs of another vista and i do not want that experience ever again .Windows 7 is a stable O/S and i think i would rather wait until windows 9 comes out.

Hi,

Sorry to hear of your issues - must be frustrating.

I am afraid MS rushed it out. They have issued a number of attempted fixes for the technical problems.

Win 8 isn't really like Vista - it is much worse.

MS want to get the users completely online, charge them subscriptions, and control the content you can access.

Win 8 is a big step towards that for them.

If you understand that is an undesirable and regressive position, then don't buy win 8.

If you already bought it - those who bought machines with it pre installed may be able to exercise so called "downgrade" rights and change to an o/s that is not so nasty.

If you bought the uprade version - you should be able to get a refund by asking for it.

I beta-tested Vista (RC1) on a P4 single-core with 768MB or RAM and a GeForce 4, and loved it.

Slow, yes. But a basically good OS, and I could see the potential.

That potential was realised with Win 7.

Win 8 continues that evolution. It's great, under the bonnet.

BUT, I want the eye-candy back. Performance isn't an issue here.

Nor is the new interface, i am getting to like it.

The eye-candy in Vista Ultimate SP2 looks so gorgeous even today.

And most of the opposition to Vista was, and is, FUD.

Wenda.

Agreed, except that some decent performance base is needed. And, I virtually never had a problem with Vista. Never had even one significant problem. I am not having problems with 8 either (except maybe small ones because I am using an old lappy with 8), but problems aren't the problem to hardly anyone that doesn't like 8. Some will have even terrible probs with any Win OS.

I like Vista a lot. Always have. Never had any problems with it. I still have it.

In fact I spent some time making my own unofficial SP3 vista installation media just recently - that is how much I enjoy it. :D

I don't doubt many others had issues - mostly not due to Vista itself, but technical problems from low spec hardware and lack of 3rd party driver availability - at least initially.

Sadly, it got an undeserved bad rep and didn't sell well. :(

When people say 8 is going to be another Vista - I think they mean it is going to sell badly.

That is why I point out win 8 is not like Vista .

It is very different. It has a purpose which is extremely undesirable. :warn: :warn: :warn:

I had a weird love/hate for Vista. I mean, it was definitely a nice leap from XP eye candy wise, but to be honest, Windows XP still wins the OS section of myself. I loved Vista to an extent though, and if I could tweak it for gaming, it would be replacing Windows 8.

I agree with SIW2's post though... Vista did have a bad time selling, and didn't have the best popularity among users either.

Oddly enough, they might. I believe that they have done so, for those that requested it.

There may not be a Windows 9, under any name. MS has gone from a 95% market share of desktop and laptop PCs to 20% of the expanded market that includes smart phones and tablets. I don't know if they'll lose money, but they have lost control of the market. I imagine that terrifies them.

I doubt that they care that Android is Linux based. I know nothing about Android, but somehow I don't see it leading to wide adoption of Linux on desktops/laptops. (Seen a Chrome Book lately?) I'd like to see it happen, but so far I've avoided becoming one of them Open Source hippies.

Windows 8 is definitely not Vista.

The worst of Vista that I remembered:

- OMG! resource hog...my computer broke!?
- That gadgets sidebar is so annoying!
- What the hell happened to Explorer?
- File transfer almost done 5 seconds left...comes back later WTF!? 10 minutes left???
- Blue is now my favorite color because I keep f***king getting BSOD's!
- What does Windows Defender do? Not sure but it's not doing it's job, that's for sure.

Despite all that in Vista I still gave it a long shot and ended up using it till Windows 7 came out (god bless Windows 7).

The only thing I can comment bad about Windows 8 is Metro UI is strange (maybe even useless to some) and Microsoft really skimped on user customizations.

Edit: If your system cannot already run Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7 SP1, don't expect that same computer (probably XP on it) to somehow magically be able to run Windows 8 and not run into driver, performance and software related issues.

No, really?

If I had a point, it is: Chrome = Linux-derived OS, for laptops, from Google. Android = Linux derived OS, for smartphones and tablets, from Google. Android is a success. Chrome appears to be something most people haven't heard of. This suggests that the success of Android may not drive acceptance of Linux (or its productized derivatives) on laptops or desktops.

Essentially, it is the sp2 installation media with updates since then pre integrated.

You can include your favorite reg tweaks,e.g. context menu entries, turn off uac, etc.

I also added recovery option - putting boot.wim into a folder on the os partition, which responds to the F8 key, similar to how it is done in 7 and up. You can include usb3 drivers and anything else you want in boot.wim as well e.g your imaging program perhaps Aomei backupper or macrium, and a partition manager, possibly an a/v scanner too. )

Works well, though the install.wim is bigger of course. Very useful for repair installs as well as clean installs.

Couple of ways to do it. One is to install vista onto fresh partition, skip product key, hit ctrl+shift+f3 and it will reboot into audit mode. D/l and install updates, rebooting a couple of times to make sure they have all gone in, then tick "generalise" in the syprep box and reboot into a different os. From the other os you can capture the syprepped vista partition as install.wim.

Another way is to copy the vista install media to a drive ( just copy and paste is fine). Then use something like this to install the updates into install.wim.
