Oddly enough, they might. I believe that they have done so, for those that requested it.

There may not be a Windows 9, under any name. MS has gone from a 95% market share of desktop and laptop PCs to 20% of the expanded market that includes smart phones and tablets. I don't know if they'll lose money, but they have lost control of the market. I imagine that terrifies them.
What may be more terrifying to Microsoft is the prediction that the year of Linux has done an end run around them by coming in through smart phones.
I doubt that they care that Android is Linux based. I know nothing about Android, but somehow I don't see it leading to wide adoption of Linux on desktops/laptops. (Seen a Chrome Book lately?) I'd like to see it happen, but so far I've avoided becoming one of them Open Source hippies.

    MS are worried about it.

They are rushing to try and get some kind of grip.

They haven't gone about it the right way.

They will be able to have another go.

    For your information.

Windows 8 is definitely not Vista.

The worst of Vista that I remembered:

    - OMG! resource hog...my computer broke!?
    - That gadgets sidebar is so annoying!
    - What the hell happened to Explorer?
    - File transfer almost done 5 seconds left...comes back later WTF!? 10 minutes left???
    - Blue is now my favorite color because I keep f***king getting BSOD's!
    - What does Windows Defender do? Not sure but it's not doing it's job, that's for sure.

Despite all that in Vista I still gave it a long shot and ended up using it till Windows 7 came out (god bless Windows 7).

The only thing I can comment bad about Windows 8 is Metro UI is strange (maybe even useless to some) and Microsoft really skimped on user customizations.

Edit: If your system cannot already run Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7 SP1, don't expect that same computer (probably XP on it) to somehow magically be able to run Windows 8 and not run into driver, performance and software related issues.

    No, really?

If I had a point, it is: Chrome = Linux-derived OS, for laptops, from Google. Android = Linux derived OS, for smartphones and tablets, from Google. Android is a success. Chrome appears to be something most people haven't heard of. This suggests that the success of Android may not drive acceptance of Linux (or its productized derivatives) on laptops or desktops.

That was mostly a joke. On the other hand, does the name Richard Stallman mean anything to you?

First of all I would like to say there is nothing wrong with vista and I am really getting to like windows 8.1 and so far I have never had any major issues with either OS in my experiences with them. I am sorry to hear of your issues but I am sure that something will get worked out soon.

Essentially, it is the sp2 installation media with updates since then pre integrated.

You can include your favorite reg tweaks,e.g. context menu entries, turn off uac, etc.

I also added recovery option - putting boot.wim into a folder on the os partition, which responds to the F8 key, similar to how it is done in 7 and up. You can include usb3 drivers and anything else you want in boot.wim as well e.g your imaging program perhaps Aomei backupper or macrium, and a partition manager, possibly an a/v scanner too. )

Works well, though the install.wim is bigger of course. Very useful for repair installs as well as clean installs.

Couple of ways to do it. One is to install vista onto fresh partition, skip product key, hit ctrl+shift+f3 and it will reboot into audit mode. D/l and install updates, rebooting a couple of times to make sure they have all gone in, then tick "generalise" in the syprep box and reboot into a different os. From the other os you can capture the syprepped vista partition as install.wim.

Another way is to copy the vista install media to a drive ( just copy and paste is fine). Then use something like this to install the updates into install.wim.
