scaling screen smaller then 100% to retain native res

Yesterday I installed the Nvidea driver for my Geforce 210 (desktop resize and scaling options) in Windows 8. After the update, my screen flickering black. System restore and it still works again.

Now I have a problem with the scaling of the screen, because the corners are not visible at my screen, and I want to retain my recommended and native screen resolution, to avoid a blurry screen.

Are there possibilities in Windows without the NVIDIA tool, to scale mij screen smaller than 100 percent ( the Windows tool make text smaller or larger will only work ABOVE 100%, and not smaller)

Any ideas?, thanks!

After you installed the driver, did you reboot? By default, NVidia does not force a reboot, and quite often you get that flickering until a reboot is done.

If you immediately did a system restore, you may have corrupted the install of the driver. I'd suggest installing it again (btw, they just released a new driver a couple of days ago that fixes a security vulnerability, so you should make sure you have that version)..

After I installed the driver I rebooted my PC; and after the reboot! the screen was black flickering. Try the new driver; CCC uses a lot op CPU power.

OR:

Manually change the DefautlSettings.XResolution / DefautlSettings.YResolution in WIndows 8 as in Windows 7? Any risks?

OR:

Will Powerstrip in Windows 8 work?

What are you using as a monitor? It might be recognized as a TV and is doing overscan.

Usually the settings are in the tv if they do exsist. I have a Visionquest and it does not allow me to change the overscan (and it is on the tv's end). If there's no option, you should be able to connect over vga instead of hdmi. The Bluray players such as PowerDVD HATE vga though.

My Samsung 40" TV can't doesn't allow me to change overscan. In CCC (catalyst control center) I used scaling in Windows 7, but the Nvidea drivers gives a black flickering schreen.

Is there an alternative way without CCC? Regedit a register key? / custom resolution in Windows 8 or something like that?

What is that CCC?

NVidia doesn't have that! It belongs to ATI/AMD and you'll have to remove it if using NVidia.

40" Samsung TV; possible the PC detects the screen as a TV.

How to correct overscan?

I had this issue and fixed is by using another port HDMI/DVI instead of pure HDMI or VGA or pure DVI (depends on tv model though).

About this: the TV should have a recommended connector to use on a pc usually a DVI/HDMI or recommended HDMI port or even VGA if available.

If you connect to the normal HDMI port, recommended for video player/home-cinema, then it might look bad and stretched when used on pc.
I even had issues even with the VGA port depending on what pc I used as output.

Search for the TV maximum resolution and the TV native resolution: in some case they are different resolutions and then we can expect blurry images.

I too have a Samsung 40" TV and the apps show slightly larger tghan the screen. I "solved" the problem by slightly reducing the screen resolution, but that is not really a satifactory solution. Do all apps have to run in full screen mode? Is there any way to reduce their size?

Thanks

Your best bet would be to see if your tv has a "pc mode" or to adjust overscan correvtion in yout graphics drivers.

Hello Grace

This is a good solution (run them in windowed mode), appeared here just a day or two ago:

How to correct overscan?

Hi there

As an Old School type Engineer I always look for an EASY way to solve a problem before delving into complex Computer geeky stuff like finding obscure drivers or installing 3rd party software.

A lot of modern TV's such as LG have a nice way to solve this particular problem (and also fix the screen if the Image doesn't fit quite properly on to the screen).

Do the following :

1) Connect preferably the HDMI input on the TV to your computer.
2) Press the Windows + P key to select display on 2nd monitor ONLY -- don't do this via Intel graphics utility or whatever ==> simply use the Windows + P key to select 2nd monitor.

3) On TV go to the DESKTOP on Windows 8 right click on a mouse and adjust the screen resolution to 1080p HD which is probably 1920 X 1080.

4) Now on your TV use the remote to select the PCTURE settings and select AUTOSCAN or AUTOMATIC . You should find the picture will adjust to the proper dimensions for the screen. Some TV's might have various "Cinema modes" instead or as well -- just experiment - but automatic is best if your TV has this option -- LG TV's always do.

Even if you only have RGB input (the old fashioned monitor cable) do the same thing.

Note most computers even relatively cheap laptops are capable of 1080p output on an external monitor.

If you graphics card is incapable of that resolution 1366 X 768 is also passable (roughly video at 720p).

How in the world you can see flickering on an LCD screen is beyond me --the screens don't work like that any more. !!

Incidentally if you chose EXTEND DESKTOP or DUPLICATE ON BOTH SCREENS you'll only be able to get the LOWEST screen resolution that the laptop can display on its screen. The video card can usually display higher res on external devices.

(If you are using a Desktop rather than a laptop -- same considerations -- in fact the video could be better but you probably will have at least 720p and full 1080p HD output. In my instructions you can ignore the extra monitor unless you are using two monitors but still set the TV's picture mode with the remote to AUTOMATIC / AUTOSCAN as in the above instructions).

Cheers

I found the solution somewhere else. And you need to change the picture size on the TV to Fit screen. Apparently the default of 16:9 is designed to "overscan" the screen.
