Windows 8 won't boot after new motherboard install.

Hi all,

I was reading online that Windows 8 will just reinitialize itself if you make any significant hardware changes. Kind of like what it did during the first install/boot.

So because of this I had not backed anything up (it's all replaceable I just would really rather not set everything up again).

The message I'm getting at startup is "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

Windows 8 is installed on my Vertex2 SSD which is being recognized by the bios along with my other drives. I ensured that the SSD was selected as first boot device which it was and disabled the other ones for giggles. Still nothing.

What's going on, why won't it boot? I didn't change anything other than the motherboard.

Your new MB probably comes with a new UEFI-based systems (GPT format) and your old MB uses MBR format. i don't know what brand of MB you have, but for ASUS MB, MBR support isn't dropped yet, Just connect it and select corresponding string without "UEFI:" prefix in BIOS Boot menu. So look in your BIOS to see if you have the option to use MBR drive instead of GPT.

It's true, Windows 8 will just reinitialize itself as far as re-installing software drivers for all the devices you have in your system but not for different disk format.

Did you install Win8 with OEM System Builder Channel software? If yes, then I think changing the mobo would be equivalent to installing your Win8 on another computer--i.e., it wouldn't work.

I went from an Asus P8Z77-V to an Asus P8Z77-M Pro because I built the system in a new chassis.

I tried going into the Bios and there was an option called UEFI/Legacy Boot with options of Enable both UEFI and Legacy, Disable UEFI, Disable Legacy. This was under the Boot section of the bios.

I tried disabling UEFI and it didn't seem to do anything. I still got the same message when trying to boot up.

Is there anything else I can do to not reinstall? I did not install some OEM version like someone previously asked. It was the regular Upgrade that I did just after windows 8 came out that I paid like $15 for.

Ok so I have it working now but I don't know if it is OK to keep it this way long term?

When I went back into the boot menu to select different boot devices, I found something called Windows Boot Manager in the boot devices. It was like "Windows Boot Manager (P0 VERTEX2)" and the other devices was "VERTEX2 (whateverMB)"

I kept UEFI disabled and selected Windows Boot Manager and now Windows boots fine, though seems to take longer than I remember with the other board.

Is it OK to keep it this way?

Try enabling uEFI.

ok well I re-enabled UEFI and now it boots, but the Windows Boot Manager is still selected. If I select the regular VERTEX2 drive option it still won't work.

With a uEFI /BIOS firmware you must boot from Windows Boot Manager.
