How is search better?

I've read that a lot of people find search in Windows 8 better?
I want to know why they think that.
I don't find it too good simply because you have to type what you are looking for, then specify wether it is an app or a file. Where windows 7 it showed everything which I prefer. Having to select what you are looking for just adds an extra step.

One persons "extra step" is another persons "better categorization". And you don't have to specify whether it's an app, since that's the default.

However, what makes search better is that it's integrated into Windows 8 apps, you search in everything the same way. Want to search your mail? You don't have to open the mail app then search, just type what you want to search for and select mail. Want to search Evernote? Do that.. etc.. etc..

Hi there
Your question is unclear

For example SEARCH could mean find a file or "string text" on a Disk, specific set of disks or on the entire computer.

That works exactly as in W7 in "Windows Explorer" (W7) or "File explorer" (W8) No change there at all. Just enter your text into the search field on Windows / file explorer as before.

To find an application / program / email the search in the start screen is basically no different to the SEARCH in the old Start Menu screen (W7) except W8 yields everything rather than just programs (W7).

In any case if you are using OUTLOOK it has a perfectly good email search whatever version of Windows you are using. Other email clients I'm sure have a search facility too -- if they don't I'd change your email client to something better.

I have various gripes with W8 but I can't see how the Search facility is any problem at all.

Cheers
