That makes no sense. How would you type in the run box? Clearly you are using an on-screen keyboard, which does have a Windows key. Since you have to type the command you want anyways, I fail to see why there is some huge problem here.
MY on screen keyboard has no Windows key. Even when I try to switch the keyboard using the keyboard icon on the Windows 8 keyboard, it does not show a Windows key on any of these keyboards. You're right. That would have been easy. I've seen picutes of the Windows 8 pre-release on screen keyboard and you can switch to a keyboard that has a Windows key. On my Windows 8 Pro, there is no Windows key. Unless someone can tell me how to fix that? I just assumed Microsoft didn't want you to have access to the Windows key on the RTM Windows 8.
It should be between ctrl and alt. they just changed the logo.

There is no "Alt" on my keyboard. There is a &123 then a CTL then a Smileyface. Then if I click on the Keyboard key, I get a pop-up of other keyboards. Which is just a handwriting recognition thingy, a split keyboard that still does not have an Alt or a Windows key. and an option to minimize the keyboard. Those are the only keyboards I have as options on my Windows 8...ummm..correction. This is not Windows 8 Pro. This is Windows 8 Enterprise (trail version). I have Pro on my laptop. I will have to look and see if that has the Windows key on any of its virtual keyboards.

There is a difference between the Touch Keyboard, and The On Screen Keyboard (OSK). The OSK has the windows key.

You can pin it to the taskbar if you want. Instructions here:

How to find Windows 8 On-Screen Keyboard, (open, start, run, osk.exe)?

Ahhh...that is the missing key. That sounds like the solution I was looking for. Thanx!

The Windows system has several "virtual folders" that aren't folders in the normal sense. They behave in strange ways, making it difficult to pin them, to create shortcuts to them, and even to find them. Mostly, the system consists of a "tree" with branches, a tree of folders within folders within...
