Solved Charms Bar and Switcher Hot Corners Don't work!

Here is a list of everything I noticed all of which happened at once. I believe I put my computer into sleep mode which i normally don't do and also there was a windows update to defender that I installed that I have already uninstalled to see if it was the issue.

1. My Charms Bar and Switcher Hot Corners don't work out of the blue!

2. I also noticed that I can't drag close windows apps such as the video player or photo viewer or apps store. I have to Alt+F4 to close everything.

3. I can bring up the charms menu by using Win+C, and it does work after that point. Although again I cannot close anything with the Esc key or drag to close.

4.I can click the lower left hot corner to get my desktop or start menu but no small preview window appears and I can only do this if I am currently on my desktop!
For instance:
I am in Google chrome now typing this now with the task bar visible. If I were to put my mouse in the lower left corner of the screen and left click nothing happens. If I go back to my empty desktop then click in the same spot it brings me to my start menu. But again no preview of my start menu. I also haven't seen the hot switcher task bar on the left side of my screen since this all started.

I called Microsoft and they said to refresh windows but that I would lose all my applications I installed since I installed Win8.

Hello Scolecite, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It sounds like you may have used one of the many tweaks out there to disable hot corners.

You should be able to do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this all started to hopefully undo and fix this.

I haven't done a thing to disable my charms bar or hot corners! I got windows 8 to learn it!
In fact I have not messed with a single thing in Win 8 its totally stock!

Do you have a restore point dated before this happened available?

System restore didn't work! I just tried several dates it said it failed when it rebooted.

I'm afraid the only other option is to refresh Windows 8 then.

FIXED!
I have my main monitor as an external display HDMI out from my laptop. I opened my laptop up and the screen was dark like I hoped (I thought that maybe I had the laptop screen enabled also and this was causing my problem) and when I went to close it a few wires got stuck between the lid causing it not to close all the way. The second I got rid of those wires I got all my charms functions back! So I'm not sure if was opening and closing the lid OR it was simply the wires causing the laptop lid to not record it was closed all the way but its all working now.

Brink I figured you would like to know this in case you troubleshoot other situations.
