Hello, cyndi. Welcome to Eight Forums.

The only thing I could find for EI is Internet Explorer accessibility options - Microsoft Windows Help

I do not know of or ever heard of font or background settings for Modern apps.

You may want to check Display settings in Control Panel.

There could also be something wrong with some files. You may want to run SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8 a few times if necessary.

    Hope that helps.

Update: Solved by switching themes to basic and back. In Metro mode I see this... I don't know what happened last as I don't use this PC often but it's running Windows 8 Build 8102. Even the switcher button "start menu" in normal mode shows white instead of black. 2693
