Two retarded problems I'm having with Windows 8

Okay, so Windows 8 isn't recognizing my new 1TB Levovo SATA II HDD. I tried uninstalling (every) device/driver under device manager then scanning and it still won't detect.

I tried to boot from a linux flash drive to see if it would detect it, and lo and behold, Microsoft removed the boot menu option from every computer running it, claiming it's "too fast to select", bull. I still sit for 30~45 seconds booting up Windows 8 and I have a fairly new computer. I can see the option (ESC key on HP computers) but no matter how many times I click it or hold it down, it won't enter.

I tried going into Advanced Boot Options from the (disgusting and unintuitive) Metro settings, but I don't see any option there to boot from a USB or other, just options to boot into safe-mode, wipe the PC, open command prompt, etc.

Will someone please help me resolve both these problems? I've been running Windows 8 for about a month now, and I'm close to just re-installing Windows 7, I don't mind learning new features or whatever, but it seems like Microsoft went out of their way to remove as much useful stuff out of their "new" operating system as possible.

How are connecting the HDD to the computer? If you are connecting with a USB cable and no other power the drive cannot get enough power to operate from the USB port.

No, I plugged it up with the SATA II and the power cable inside the tower, and I was somehow able to boot a diagnostics tool or something on HP and it showed there were 2 1TB HDD's hooked up, it's definitely in and being detected (by everything but Windows 8 it seems)

Did you partition the drive in disk manger, windows will not let you use it until that and then you can format it.

I'm confused, you say it's SATA II, then you say you are trying to make it boot via USB... is it SATA or USB?

I connected my drive to SATA, Windows 8 wouldn't recognize it, I tried booting from a USB into Linux, Windows 8 wouldn't allow it

Go to Computer Management Storage then click Disk Management It should show how the two drive are partition, if only one drive shows up then you may have a hardware problem. (I am going to retire for the day.)

Please, if you can explain to me how an OS that isn't even running can "not allow it", then you would be a magician.

The OS doesn't control what OS's you can boot. That's a bios function. The OS isn't even running at that time. I think you're blaming windows for things it can't possibly control.
