Automatic repair might work. Apparently you have an ISO. You can try automatic repair after burning the ISO to a disc--thus, creating an install DVD. Technically, refresh and reset are not clean installs, but they might as well be for all practical purposes. You could also try SCF /SCANNOW. Also, you could try disabling or uninstalling "hotspot shield and connectify."

Edit: At this point, you also could create an install flash drive with your ISO.

Details are very meager. Computer age, specifications, history, installed software.

This came up on another forum this week and the problem there was that Norton 360 security was causing what was called "hang time" by the owner. It was actually a stall.

Norton was removed and the owner still had problems. So he went into his registry and deleted remnants of several other brands of protection that he had apparently been tinkering with. Then he could boot up repeatedly with no stalls but without Norton and depending only on Windows Defender and Firewall.

I Google'd that problem and found several forums wherein the same problem occurred even with Windows 7. Norton suggested removing the program and reinstalling it.

So you probably have a corrupted file somewhere, or incompatible software, or some embedded Trojans, or worms or other. Often when a computer has been used for a couple of year the registry gets so modified by nasty's, updates and other installed after market software that it is unrecognizable. This occurs often with protection that was installed after market and on OS's installed as upgrades. I just bought a new computer with windows 8 factory installed and with Norton factory installed and I do not have any stall problems at all so it isn't a conflict coming from Norton or Windows 8.

The experts say that it is easier and faster to transfer all files elsewhere and wipe the hard drive than to spend time trying to find and clean out the troublesome culprits. For myself I hired a professional Guru firm to clean up my computer on an annual contract. They took over remotely and whizzed around for over 45 minutes. But they cleaned it alright. They use some kind of commercial cleaning software. Actually installed it on my computer and posted the link on my desk top. But it disappeared after a month.
