    DVD playback/recognition problems

Hello all. I hope I'm posting this in the correct place.
I have recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 8 online with some mixed emotions.
Apart from the backup disc not working at all I have other problems. The main one being that it won't play dvds - in fact it won't even recognise that a dvd is in the drive.

Having read much about the decision by Microsoft to withdraw support for dvd playback I have now installed both Windows Media Centre (via the free download/product key) and VLC player. However neither of these programmes will play nor recognise a dvd in the drive.

    Windows Media Centre reports
"WMC cannot detect a video dvd in the DVD-Rom drive. Insert a video DVD into the drive"

I have tried many dvds, all of which have been played by this system when Vista was the running OS.

The dvd drive is recognised in Computer as "BD-RE Drive (G" and this moniker does not change when a dvd is inserted. Autoplay options never appear.
When a cd is inserted to the drive the name of the dvd drive remains the same but "audio cd" appears after and the cd plays fine.

In device manager the dvd drive appears as a MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ-220S ATA device

I'm wondering if somehow the drive now "thinks" it's just a cd drive? Is that possible?

I have uninstalled the drive and rebooted to re-install it with no effect on this problem.

Any help or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

    EDIT
oops I forgot to mention I've also tried the registry edit
    "reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 000000001"
which doesn't appear to have done anything.

"In device manager the dvd drive appears as a MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ-220S ATA device" I assume that Device manager reports that the best driver is being used. Regardless, I use a Vista driver for one of the system components of my older HP laptop (i.e., a newer driver is not available). I didn't need to install it in compatibility mode. Maybe you could download the Vista driver (with installer) you used successfully before in Vista (or perhaps an updated one) from Sony and give it a try. You could try both compatibility mode and not.

Hi znod, I am presuming that that is the driver currently being used, as it is marked as being from 2006. There are no newer drivers available and the device is listed as working normally in Device Manager.

I've also noticed that once a dvd is inserted the drive disappears from Explorer, but only when you try to open a file from an inserted dvd. It still appears in the Computer window.

ps The drive still works absolutely fine in Ubuntu, which is installed on the second hard drive on this laptop.

I see, but I don't know what is going wrong. Will think more.

Lol, thanks for your efforts. Don't hurt yourself thinking too hard!
As my brand new upgrade disc doesn't boot I am loathe to re-install Vista to upgrade to 8 again. The thought of all those updates is a terrible thing!
And apparently, you can't do a fresh install with the upgrade disc with Win 8. Well, you can but it won't activate.

You are very welcome. Check this how to do clean install with Windows 8 upgrade tutorial. Have you seen the tutorial? Maybe it will get you going on clean install with upgrade disc. Did you create the disc? or buy it?

Yes, I've seen that but I've also seen reports of failures too. I've tried with previous versions of Windows and all went well. However, Microsoft say that this isn't possible with Win 8, but I see differently in that link
The disc is a bought (Microsoft) disc (came from Germany iirc) and though the 64 bit disc boots ok (then asks for drivers???) the 32 bit does not even fully boot. Microsoft support reckons it's because it's an upgrade disc attempting to run on a system that has Win 8 already installed.

So you are running 32-bit or 64-bit?

I am sorry to be so inquisitive. Trying to work something out. So you started to Vista, inserted the 32-bit disc, and ran the set up, right? That way you didn't have to boot from it, right?
