    No problem.
I had Vista installed and upgraded to 8 online.
I then ordered the upgrade discs, as a backup.
First set didn't arrive but the second order came via UPS.

Today I tried to boot from the disc to check it worked and it didn't. I get the "press any key to boot from cd dvd" and hit a key and the disc then just spools down. Nothing happens.
The 64 bit disc, however, will boot normally and gets to the language screen then asks for drivers - presumably sata drivers? Though I'm sure they are usually included.

i guess you think that a reinstall might solve your problem. I am trying to figure out whether you could do a refresh or a reset with an upgrade disc you can't boot to--assuming you are running 32 bit. I am sure you know, but if you had a full install DVD, then you could:

    Startup to installer DVD.;
    Choose language, etc.
    Hit next
    Choose “Repair your computer”
Choose “Troubleshoot” to see these options:
    “Refresh your PC
    Reset your PC
Advanced options”--Choosing this option gives these additional options:
    “System Restore
    System Image Recovery
    Automatic Repair
    Command Prompt”

Refresh your PC—Attempts to solve system related problems without affecting your files (system is reinstalled). Installed programs will have to be reinstalled except those from the Windows Store. A list of uninstalled programs is provided. Settings will be changed back to defaults. To do a refresh, you will need to have install media.” ”Install media” include an install disc, an ISO, and a flash drive set up to install.

Reset your PC—Removes everything and reinstalls Win8 . To do a reset, you will need to have install media.” ”Install media” include an install disc, an ISO, and a flash drive set up to install.

Unfortunately, I have never done an upgrade by downloading or by using an upgrade DVD.

Interestingly I just loaded the 32 bit backup disc into the dvd drive and after a while the autorun prompt appeared top right. I selected open and view files and I get this
so it can read data dvds then :-)

Hummm!!! Maybe it's better to work on the original problem that to think reinstall or, etc. Not sure why reinstall, or whatever, would solve your problem anyway.

If you don't do a full install with an upgrade DVD, then you run the set up from within the OS (or use auto run), right? From where you are, I wonder if a repair install is possible by running set up. Don't know what would happen WRT activation. Just thinking about possibilities for repairing your system given what you have. Need more info before thinking seriously about trying a repair install--even if you thought it might fix your problem.

Enjoying chatting. Need to change gears now. I'll check back later.

I was just guessing really. I was just wondering whether any legacy remained from Vista and it was screwing up the drive. There's no rush. I'm just missing dvd playback for the moment.
Any further ideas would be welcome :-)
    Thanks again.

You are very welcome. Upgrades don't always go well that's for sure. Maybe some sort of reinstall would fix things. Be checking back.

Yes, those are the lines I was thinking along.
I'll mull things over for a day or two.
    Cheers

    An update
As I was sat with nothing to do and there being nothing to watch on the telly I copied the Windows 8 upgrade iso onto a usb stick.
The laptop booted from this usb stick with no problem (unlike the paid for Microsoft backup dvd).
I then proceeded to do a fresh install as per the link that znod gave earlier in this thread.
I was impressed with the speed of the installation - about 10 to 12 minutes :-)
I was further impressed when I looked in the SYSTEM page to see that Windows 8 Pro was activated!
Obviously this wasn't enough for me so I thought I would test this and proceeded to download and install 165MB of Windows updates. Surprisingly these installed without any mention of any non-activated system and after rebooting the SYSTEM page still reported the system as activated (as it still does now) so no need so far to refresh or use the downloaded .bat file for activation.

I still had my product key for Windows Media Centre so I proceeded to download and install that. This may not have gone too well as it took over half an hour to install. After a couple of reboots the system is fine but when I try to use WMC the cpu use jumps up to 80% + and the fans become noisy. Anyway the WMC window opens fine but does still not recognise the fact that a pre-recorded dvd was in the drive :-(
So basically I'm where I was before but now I know that no Vista legacy remains to interfere with anything.
I may try to re-install WMC at a later time.

Can you system restore back to before you installed Windows Media Center? Sounds like a good play. Sounds like we found out what we wanted to know. Way to go.

Sadly not znod as I just manually created the first restore point. I was amazed that one was not made before the 165MB of windows updates!
As you say, the fault with the dvd drive was not related to Vista or any old settings.
