I have absolutely no bloody idea...
what is the windows virtual disk service? never heard of it before...

friend of mine on windows 8 saw it in his event log and he wants to know what it is, so..it falls to me to ask as he's not got regular internet access... that and I end up doing all his maintenance work for him somehow... *shrugs*

No offense taken. :)

Basically what FuturDreamz posted above, and it provides management services for disks, volumes, file systems, and storage arrays. Without it, Disk Management would not work.

It needs to stay enabled.

is it normal for it to sometimes have an unexpected provider failure? I'm fairly sure windows would complain in no uncertain terms if it were a real problem...

I'm not sure if it's common or not, but you could post the event log to see if someone may be able to read it to know what the issue was.

Yeah, you'll know if there was an issue when something involving disk management didn't work. :)
