    Windows 8 issue

    Hey guys,

I am in a spot of trouble. When I log in, after a few seconds the screen goes black. Things are still running (when it first happened I was in firefox and I could hear the video I was watching still playing in the background), and I can open up the task manager and see it. But behind it everything stays black. I can also get into a few settings via the ctrl-alt-del option, but only ones that pop up like the task manager. Its the like desktop itself has gone missing.

I can log into the guest account and that works perfect.

I have no idea where to start, any ideas would be amazing.

    Thanks

Does it happen only when you use Firefox ? If yes, try to reset it to original state. If you have a menu displayed, click on help->Troubleshooting Information then click on reset firefox.
BTW, what version of firefox installed ?

    Thanks for the reply.

It doesn't seem to have anything to do with Firefox. I log in, and even when I do nothing it goes the way I described.

Maybe I misunderstood your question, I thought that it happens when you have a Video played in firefox.
Do you have your monitor set to turn off after a certain period of time ?

Try setting up a new account equivalent to the one you are using. Be sure all your data are accounted for in the new account. See if it works. If yes, delete the original user account. You will be using an account with a new name so be sure the name is one you like. If you really want to use the original name, set up another new equivalent user account with the preferred name (making sure again all your data again are accounted for), and delete the other recently created user account. Don't use the tutorial on changing a user name. The tutorial, itself, says, in effect, that the procedure I have suggested for changing a user is preferred.

Create a system restore point once you get everything the way you want it (hopefully). It things go bad again, pay close attention to when the problem first occurred. Then, you may be able to avoid the problem after you get everything working again. You also might want to create a disk image of the properly functioning setup.
