Hello All,
I'm thinking of buying Windows 8, I'm so close but after reading a number of these post im a tad concerned, whether i want Windows 8??
Everyone is sayings it really bad, is it really that bad?
I'm running Windows 7 and I'm happy with it, but i like the idea of having the latest stuff, and a $15 upgraded is not that much.

I just want to know if it worth losing $15 or should stick with windows 7
Is Windows 8 as bad as everyone makes it out to be?

I have a desktop and dont be plan on getting any touch on it.

"Everyone" is not saying it's bad. "Everyone" is not unhappy with it. "Everyone" is not making it out to be bad.

Some people like it, some people don't. Go down to your local big box store and play around with it. Only you can decide, and don't let other peoples whining convince you one way or the other.

Another option, download the 90 day trial and use it for 90 days for free.

Just a quick question, I brought windows but i think i might of made a mistake.
I said i didn't want to keep any of my stuff, and i havn't done a backup, because what i planed on doing was dual booting. Is this a problem because it downloading to my PC and i dont want it to overrid my Windows7 without me even backing up

It will not delete your files, but will copy them to a folder called Windows.old, you can then move those files out of there into your new setup if you want.

Honestly, it's not. It seems the people that say it's "bad" are the most vocal about their complaints. Some of them are legitimate, some are just daft.

If you're just more or less into the latest stuff, and being able to pay only 15 dollars for Windows 8, go for it. There's is a quite a few new worthwhile things in Windows 8 other than the Start Screen. The new Start UI is pretty easy to get to know, you just need to use it to learn it, versus ignoring it and not using it. There are many people here on this forum that can help out there. For example, how to bring some start menu links onto the Start Screen, like Computer and Documents and such.

When you boil it down, it's not too difficult. It's not that bad. You will probably just need some guidance on how to use it effectively.

My biggest gripe outside of start, is the fact that default apps are those damn metro apps which rip me away from the desktop. I find it rather infuriating to use Windows 8 for any length of time. I just find that I am always more or less frustrated.

I was on a Windows 8 box today, and needed a screenshot. Usually, I click on start, run and type snip and it's there. On 8 I had to hit the Windows key and jump off the desktop, then type snip, then click it and snapped back to desktop. So, while not more steps it more time consuming...I found it utterly annoying, distracting and it made me a bit angry. Am I being irrational?. Yes. But it's honestly how I feel. I know I am not alone. Had this convo with quite a number of people at work.

All you have to do is pinning it to the Metro UI and it's right in front of you and only require one single click and your traditional way requires: 1- click on start 2- click on run 3- type snip 4-click again

What? That's the exact same thing as on 7. Hit Start, type snip, hit enter. Same process on Windows 8, different UI. But again with the apps, just remove them and make a full screen full of Desktop apps.

I don't know if something irrational can be considered a legitimate complaint.... ;) :)

Also, were you trying to take a snippet of something or just a screenshot? Because that's easier on Windows 8, Start key and PrintScreen, bam, that's all.

complainers are always more vocal than supporters in any medium. that's just the way it is. when someone complains, they want anyone and everyone to hear them. people who like it just go about their business.

Something like this...

Right click on the Outlook tile on Start or in All Apps (you will need to right click anywhere on the Start Screen and then hit All apps on the bottom of the command bar) and you will see something that says Open file location. Click that.

Then it will open a File Explorer window, which will allow you to drag the shortcut to the Desktop.

I take it you cant do it for Internet Explorer because it just opens the Metro

You can actually, you can also make the IE tile on the Start Screen to just open on the Desktop.

This is done by going to the Start Screen, and typing in internet options then select the Settings filter. Open that, and hit the Programs tab. Then switch IE's defaults to the Desktop.

Or, you can head over to the Program Files folder in the C drive, then go to Internet Explorer. Find the iexplore icon, then drag to the Desktop and rename it.

What Coke shows above would work and here's another way and I think it's a little faster:
Just go to: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

This is where all the links for everything installed in your PC which applications such as
Start8, Classic shell etc... use for the Start Menu. Double click the folder for outlook which is under Microsoft Office 2013,
right click to pin to Start/Taskbar or right click and hold then drag it to desktop to create shortcut.

Sorry for all the questions. I have another one to ask.
When ever I boot my computer it automatically log on to an account called "Other" then fails.
I looked in control panel and I don't have any other users accounts created it should be just me. How do I get it to log into my account only??

This is simply not true. It takes no more time to open the start page than it does the start menu. Both have nice fade-in animations that take 1/4 of a second to perform, but they can be disabled (and talk about "jerking then"). It takes no more time to type the letters, and you can press enter.. there is no need to "click" it.

This is part of your problem with Windows 8. You "perceive" that it takes more time to do things, but if you were to measure it, you would find the time is more or less the same. It literally takes me less than half a second to launch the snipping tool using the start page.

My phone auto corrected on me. I meant to say it wasn't more steps OR any more time consuming...it is simply annoying to me. I really just don't like flipping back and forth between the radically different looking screens. It's almost an irrational complaint...but I just don't like it.
