This is a bit of a saga but you may find it interesting and worth reading.
Thankfully, I created a system image on an external HDD
before attempting the Windows 8 Pro upgrade from my perfectly functional
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
I was full of great anticipation. I read at Staples you must do a clean install
from Win 7 pro 64 bit but I thought I'd try the install and keep my stuff. contrary
to common wisdom in this forum.
Well, the first attempt to upgrade failed at 84 % Oh it gets better.
Knowing I have that windows 7 image safely tucked away I tried the
"keep nothing" option. It failed at 82% - No explanation just the words.
installation failed. Hmmm I though, what can be wrong here?
Three weeks later and at the "now" Dec 18 still no go with the upgrade.
I have two Windows 8 Pro 64 bit install DVDS and switching didn't help.
Failed, failed, failed and failed.
Windows 8 put a bunch of files in a folder so I figured I'd best recall that
image I made.
The windows 7 repair DVD I made worked great and my system was restored to
the condition it was in prior to the upgrade attempts.
All this set in motion a few more things to cause me concern.
Because of those failures I tried to boot with the Windows 8 Pro DVD and
install the old way. In doing so I got that horrible error message we've heard so
much about.
“Windows encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use.
Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.”

End of Black Screen Message. Win 7
End of Blue Screem Message Win 8
To keep this as short and simple as possible, basically
That message was the same as someone telling me there is
a window open in a room that has NO windows.
In this case, No USB or malfunctioning devices.
I then learned the same error occurred when I booted with the
original Windows 7 Pro 64 bit Install DVD.
Its files are dated 2009
I booted with a recently purchased OEM windows 7 pro 64 bit DVD
for a new build and what do you know, NO error and a re install was
beginning, which I stopped, of course.
You might want to check your Windows installation DVD and see
if you are still able to use it to do a new clean install.
