Losing Internet and System restore point after Updates

Hi all - I have had a Dell Inspiron 3520 for 3 weeks now. It has had 2 Windows Updates in that time. Both times I lost Internet connection and any way of connecting. The connection bar for the wi-fi was on, connection good but no Internet. After a lot of chat with Dell I did a System restore to Factory settings the first time (16 days ago). I also did a restore point once I'd re-set everything up again.

2 days ago the same thing happened after a Windows update and I also could not locate the restore point so it was back to Factory settings.

I've tried Dell again online chat at work but they insist on me talking again to someone online which takes a lot of time.

Has anyone seen this before and do you have any ideas/suggestions/workarounds?

Thanks

I would suggest for laptop is to check for the latest BIOS. Go to setup or run system info to find out the BIOS version your system currently have. Last week I helped a friend with a problem installing Windows 8 in his DELL laptop and it turned out that he needs to update the BIOS.

The problem you are having is unrelated to his, but to insure that you have the latest BIOS. Try this first then we can go from there.

I wouldn't do the same update(s) again until what's happening is sorted. Which one(s) are you apparently having problems with?

No particular update as far as i can see. Just a 'general' update on 1st December (restored to Factory settings after 2 very lengthy calls to Dell Premium Support), then created my own 'Restore Point' and again on 15th - it didn't even recognize the Restore point - I was only given the option of Factory setting dated 22/10/12...there's another update due tomorrow so I'll try and update the BIOS in the meantime, although in some ways I'm also wondering why this is a problem on a laptop ordered in mid-November!
Thanks all so far anyway...

You are welcome. I think you know that you can stop Windows updates from being installed automatically, right? You could go back to factory fresh again (or not) and turn automatic updating off.

Can you return your machine to Dell at this point? They aren't providing anything significant in the way of support.

I am assuming that your machine did not come with an install disc. If thing keep going the way they are going, you could buy an install DVD and do a clean install. In the process you could get rid of all Dell installed junk. While there shouldn't be any, you, even at this point, run the Win8 Upgrade Assistant in an attempt to find incompatibilities.

I doubt it's your problem, but did you purchase any AV products put on the machine by Dell. If, yes, I'd disable them (or uninstall them) and see if things improve. You could let Windows take over the security measures for now. If you installed Norton, then there is an uninstaller on the Norton website. You much use the uninstaller to completely rid yourself of Norton.

The laptop came with pre-installed McAfee as part of the price. After the problem occurred the first time, their first suggestion was to de-install McAfee which I did (with no adverse effect as I couldn't connect anyway) and the problem was still there. I was tempted to de-install it and use good 'ole AVG which we have elsewhere. The other problem connected with this is that once it's 'stable' it will be locked in an office used for Debt Advice (my wife and I run a church based and financed free to local citizens Debt Advice charity organisation, staffed by volunteers) admin by a volunteer on a Wednesday only. It will be no joke if she turns up to find there's no connection because of a previous day's Windows update! Thanks again

Good luck with your problem; hope it works out somehow. Yes, get rid of McAfee.

For a new Laptop, the first thing you should do is to create emergency recovery disks.

Second, You'll often find a slew of programs you didn't really want—game trials, utilities, Anti Virus software and more...
There are two new Windows 8 capabilities that perform different kinds of cleanup: Refresh & Reset.
Since this is a brand new laptop, I would suggest that you do a RESET that actually starts you over, returning your computer/laptop to its mint condition ie. without all the additional bloatware installed. Make sure you backup any data you may have to a USB stick or external Hard Drive first.

With the above suggestion, that ensures you will not have any software conflicts with Windows Updates and
also with latest BIOS update, you should be able to install Windows Updates.

To disable Windows Updates, you actually avoid the problem, not really fixing it.

He will need an install medium to do a reset. It's not clear if he has one. Right on not getting at the problem by avoiding the updates. But, at least the computer might be ready to go when needed--and before the solution to the problem is found. And, in post #3, I said "I wouldn't do the same update(s) again until what's happening is sorted."

I 'think' I might be ok. There was an Update on Wednesday so I switched off the auto-update, then de-installed McAfee (was on board when it arrived 'till May 2014) then installed, restarted and re-installed Mcafee - so far so good...a bit of a faff but I reckon I can work with it...

Sorry all but the saga continues. The original Dell laptop Inspiron 3520 was replaced. The new one was fine until, you guessed it, there was an update and BAM! No Internet. I restored to just before the Update and all was ok except that I had to re-install Office 2010 which I had installed before the Update/Restore point. After the next update the same happened and this time I was able to log into McAfee, sign in and all good, so I thought ah-ha I have this licked now. That was until Tuesday night when an automatic update happened - I went in last night and couldn't access Internet or even the Mcafee account as it kepy saying no connection. The Wi-Fi is on and the signal box is showing a great signal. I restored back to the last date ie Monday 21st and the same problem. Its like whatever I try there is a compensating 'Borg-like' adapting thing in Windows 8! Yes I could replace or get a refund but it can't be Dell? I'm going to go on their Windows 8 page as well and email their Support Director with the latest problem. I can't download anything due to the problems at home - I'm at work now so if anyone has download suggestions I can take them home on a stick and see how it goes. It seems incredible to me that a laptop built in October 2012, with McAfee onboard and Windows 8 is having this trouble. I'm using a TalkTalk Wi-Fi which is no problem to 1 desktop XP, 1 laptop XP, 1 laptop was Vista upgraded to Windows7 and 1 desktop Windows 7 with super duper stuff inside for our Animator/Illustrator son still trying to get his business off the ground (Squishy Media Homepage - thought I'd get the plug in!).

Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks

Latest news

What I have done to work around this problem is switch off McAfee and Windows Updates. I also never restart the machine. This has been the case since February - all ok. Not ideal but I just can't keep going back to Factory settings.

Sorry to get back to you late. McAfee is known to cause all kind of problems and BSOD's. I would suggest that you uninstall it completely using their special uninstaller downloaded from their website.
