Sorry all but the saga continues. The original Dell laptop Inspiron 3520 was replaced. The new one was fine until, you guessed it, there was an update and BAM! No Internet. I restored to just before the Update and all was ok except that I had to re-install Office 2010 which I had installed before the Update/Restore point. After the next update the same happened and this time I was able to log into McAfee, sign in and all good, so I thought ah-ha I have this licked now. That was until Tuesday night when an automatic update happened - I went in last night and couldn't access Internet or even the Mcafee account as it kepy saying no connection. The Wi-Fi is on and the signal box is showing a great signal. I restored back to the last date ie Monday 21st and the same problem. Its like whatever I try there is a compensating 'Borg-like' adapting thing in Windows 8! Yes I could replace or get a refund but it can't be Dell? I'm going to go on their Windows 8 page as well and email their Support Director with the latest problem. I can't download anything due to the problems at home - I'm at work now so if anyone has download suggestions I can take them home on a stick and see how it goes. It seems incredible to me that a laptop built in October 2012, with McAfee onboard and Windows 8 is having this trouble. I'm using a TalkTalk Wi-Fi which is no problem to 1 desktop XP, 1 laptop XP, 1 laptop was Vista upgraded to Windows7 and 1 desktop Windows 7 with super duper stuff inside for our Animator/Illustrator son still trying to get his business off the ground (Squishy Media Homepage - thought I'd get the plug in!).

    Any suggestions welcome!

    Thanks

What I have done to work around this problem is switch off McAfee and Windows Updates. I also never restart the machine. This has been the case since February - all ok. Not ideal but I just can't keep going back to Factory settings.

Sorry to get back to you late. McAfee is known to cause all kind of problems and BSOD's. I would suggest that you uninstall it completely using their special uninstaller downloaded from their website.

I went into Task Scheduler and set System Restore to create a restore point every day at 12:01am. Under Conditions I cleared all the check boxes because I want SR to run regardless of whether computer is idle or not. I have been watching this for about 1 week and so far it's not created a single...

Solved Restore point on last Win Updates in Performance & Maintenance
The last round (3-12) of nine Windows updates (included KB 2919442 the "spring release / Win 8.1 update 1") Usually when the installation starts one thing you see is "creating a restore point' - that did not happen this time for me. Since Windows 8 is not creating System Restore points, apparently because I have a dual boot Windows 8 / Windows 7 setup, I'd like to schedule one every 3-4 days or so. Is there any way to run system restore from Command line or batch file or Powershell? If so then I could schedule it to run...
