Today, when I finished loading it on my friends laptop he let out a big exhale of relief when he finally saw that he had a way to get to his programs again. The poor guy had been trying for days before he called me, and he is actually a fairly apt pc user. I have talked with probably a dozen folks who are using, or have used Windows 8. I have yet to talk with anyone who actually likes the new interface. Everyone in my circles misses the old work-flow it seems, with the exception of some folks around these boards, but my hunch is that many of the folks around here have ties to Microsoft in some way which makes them feel obliged to support it.

So, among my friends, family, and work colleagues, Win 8 is batting a flat zero. I wonder how many others are hearing similar reviews from friends. I wonder if enough people take issue, microsoft will actually listen to their user base, and just make a few minor tweaks that could make the world happy.

So many of the conversations we have been seeing lately could have been avoided if they had just included the start menu for those who want it, but also added this whole new metro interface for touch. The entire concept would have been so much more warmly received, and thousands of forum/blog post bitch fests could have been avoided (including this one). I am just saying. I have been using the OS for over a few months, and I still cannot understand why these decisions were made. After 2 months with the vanilla OS, I loaded up classic shell, and am much happier with it. If the new changes were an improvement, then why after using them for 2 months would I feel like going back to the old way was an upgrade.

There are some things I really like about this OS. It all could have been so different.

I have said as much myself in my post article 'Windows 8 first impressions', couldn't agree more with what you have said!..........

Fanboys here totally refuse to accept that Win8 is nothing short of a PERFECT Godsent OS.

I use 3rd party applications that give me drop down menus and classic menus and to think that these are for my Win 7. Going to Win 8 is definitely a DOWNGRADE for me and all hell will freeze over before I even consider Win8. This post will probably get me branded as a troll or worse, but it is my honest opinion! If MS gives me the OPTIONS it removed then and only then I may consider Win 8.
Says who, I like Windows 8 and I find a good amount of things to make Windows 8 a PERFECT GODsent OS.

And no, the Ribbon wasn't change for the sake of change, nor is the Start Screen. There are perfectly good reasons all around that back up the stance that the UI changes are necessary. No, it's not for just touch and smartphone eras, it's more because MOST COMMON people weren't using it as it was designed to. If that's not you, well, I don't know what to say.

It would appear that experience is now revealing much more regarding how people feel about Windows 8 and its many aspects. The good needs to be digested with the bad.

    Hi there'

For some things its fine - for others an unmitigated disaster.

That said just look at Linux distributions -- there really these days isn't a huge amount of difference between any of them (or at least the "big 5 or 6" including UBUNTU, SUSE, FEDORA -Based on Red Hat- ) etc.) but logon to some of the Linux Forums and just see how a user of one of these distros simply HATES anything to do with any of the others when with a little bit of work they could all be as far a an end user is concerned - identical clones of each other.

Some people will always hate W8 for ANY reason - or even NONE - just as some hate anything to do with our famous "Fruit Company".

I've met loads of people who LOVE W8 and others who HATE it -- and in both sets of groups there are people who when asked why they like or hate it simply say - "I just DO -- no reason".

You can't always apply logic to Human Beings - unless you are Hari Seldon in the Foundation series by Asimov - Psychohistory.

Of course we could also just have stuck with an abacus, chalk & slate.
people aren't installing third party software so they can resort to an earlier os. They are installing third party software so that they can return functionality and practicality to a forcibly restricted os. There are lots of benefits to windows 8, but it's the interface and usability restrictions that are annoying so many people.
    exactly!

I'm sorry, but i am really inept and having a hard time getting to know Win8. I just purchased a new laptop which came with a free 30 day trial of Microsoft Office. I had intended to set my laptop up with 2 users - both me, but one for work and one for personal. So what i did was...
