Solved Unable To Assign A Drove Letter Between C and I

I have just installed Win 8 Home Premium on a clean Intel SSD after much struggling with my HP H8-1414's EFI BIOS. I have a HDD spinner to be used primarily for data and backup images. My problem is Disk Management will not allow me assign D: through H: as drive letters on partitions I create on the HDD. It automatically assigns I:. The only other device on the machine is the CD/DVD drive. No usb drives or any such thing. If I shrink C a little and create a partition on the SSD, the same thing happens -- not allowed to assign D through H.

I have many Office 2010 macro's and Windws scripts that depend on D and F. Win 8 is the first version I've used that wouldn't let use those letters.

What might I have done wrong to cause this and what can I do to fix it?

Thank you very much

Quickly off the top of my head, Windows will hide drive letters of drives that don't have media in them. Do you have a multi-SD/CF/etc reader? They might be taking up the drive letters. Like theog says, look at your disk management and see where those letters are being used.

Thank you

Here is the screen shot after a few futile attempts. I can see those missing letters are taken up by some devices that are not present but don't know how to fix it :)

The problem 'seems' to be that the Hard drives are not in the natural flow so are arguing as to what drive is C and what drive is I, The natural progression of drives would be A,B,C,D and so on. So, if you were to name I drive as C, and then C drive as I, then the natural 'selection' process will occur.

You were right on the money as Diskmangement show.

Thanks to both you and Theog
