not sure first time i heard of "windows to go " new for win8 i guess

any way i google a bit found very little.
go to start type windows to go click on the one in settings and open it and make sure it set to NO

if its set to no then make sure your hard drive is set to first boot in the bios
other people i seen in google having same problem install win8 from a image on a external usb hdd did you install windows from a external image by any chance

this link goes on for a month post is a year old looks promising for an answer and then it just stops no more post .

"Windows To Go" is a Windows 8 Enterprise option. You can creat a Windows To Go install on a thumb drive or external hard drive that is portable. You can then plug your drive into your home computer and boot from it. You are then running Windows 8 Enterprise from the thumb drive. The idea is to let employes take thier Windows 8 work desktop etc home with them without having to take the PC too. Your internal hard drive and OS are isolated from Windows 8 To Go and unaffected by anything you do in the To Go.

Jimwwodward, how did you install your Windows 8 and what version is it? What makes you think it's a to go install?

EDIT: I'm guessing your hard drive is showing up as removable? Windows thinks it's an eSATA drive instead of just SATA. If so I think thats likely a driver issue. Installing the latest chip-set/SATA driver from the manufacturer may fix it.

i did use 'mini tool drive copy' to make a duplicate of my ssd, and then tried to start windows using the (usb)duplicate drive.
but i never changed the ssd - maybe using duplicate drive triggered some change of my internal ssd.

my ssd is recognized as internal sata drive, and i did reinstall sata drivers.

i did boot a duplicate drive as internal drive and refreshed it - it removed all aps i had installed but did make it no longer a 'windows to go' system.

    thanks

Have a look at this registry key: HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
There are all drives listed with an identifier. Perhaps your program 'mini tool drive copy' has assigned the drive as "flash drive".

    Maybe this helps:
Export the registry tree "MountedDevices" - then delete "MountedDevices".
Next Windows reboot "MountedDevices" will be created new - hopefully without wrong identifier.

    Maybe try this?

Booting your Windows To Go workspace
Now that your workspace is ready you have two primary options for booting, using either the new Windows 8 startup options or configuring your machines firmware.
Enable the Windows To Go Startup options

    Click Win+W
Type "Change Windows To Go startup options", click enter
    Select Yes
    Click Save Changes

The only 3rd party software that I know of, that fully supports Windows 8 is PARAGON 12.

PARAGON Software Group - News: Significant booting challenges on EFI systems when upgrading to Windows 8

FREIBURG, Germany, December 11, 2012 - Paragon Software Group (PSG), a leader in data backup, disaster recovery, and data migration solutions reveals the market educational article about possible Windows 8 booting issues and explanations on how the user can solve these problems: "The new Windows 8 and Server 2012 will be the base operating systems for upcoming new computers, laptops and servers. UEFI is the recommended platform for all of them. In spite of all of its advantages, many users are still not familiar with UEFI. There are known issues which may arise when you decide to manage EFI boot options or migrate to an EFI-based computer from another one. In most of these cases, your OS will simply not boot".
