    Theoretical uses for Windows 8/RT?

I'm just thinking that the idea behind Windows 8/RT is flexible enough that it can be configured to work in different ways.

    Here's a couple examples:

Car infotainment system: It would be very simple to put a touch screen into a dash, and include GPS and a 3G modem. Ideally the interface should be configured so that accounts are tied to the keys, with an easy way to keep information secure from people you don't want to have access to it.

Set top box: Take Windows RT, add a DVD/Bluray drive and a Metro playback app, and you're pretty much done. This would also need to have a means of having basic functionality without logging in (disk playback, weather app, internet, user selected apps), but you can quickly log in to access all functionality. Ideally it will automatically log you out when idle for a while or while playing a movie. This could use either a Kinect interface or (possibly more precise) something like a Nintendo Wiiremote interface.

    thoughts?

And here I was thinking about Windows RT being good for medical charts in hospitals, law enforcement patrol vehicles, or server management.

Course regular old windows was already good enough for all of that and has been for years now...

It's the OS UI that's catching up to the UI of all of those /existing/ devices. Look at how the X-Box evolved.

Win8 is following the trend, not inventing it

Unfortuately for me and a lot of other people it's sort of an "Idiocracy" trend that does not follow our needs very well

The only theoretical use for RT: Using Word/excel/powerpoint. Past that, Windows RT is practically worthless. You can do that other stuff on Windows 8, but then again, you could also do it on 7.

I think what the OP is trying to say is like the Ford Sync system (which is a MS system) it runs on an arm processor. Though very feature packed having a metro style interface in dash would be pretty cool and easy to use. at least it would make more sense than the sync systems I have seen in the new Fords...

And it's interface is actually pretty good for a TV box, but it would need to be tweaked a bit.

For the Car Dash System,, Local Scout App would be very nice to have.
I have it on my WP7 Phone and love it, it has come in extremely useful more times than I can count when traveling anywhere.
Personally it should be included as a Default App on Win8. However, it would not work unless you have WIFI at minimum.

This is a friendly forum request to all members.....
Any Negativity. Can we please ask people to take that to a different thread?
I was going to start a thread similar to this one, but this is already started.

I do not care what people think of the GUI or any changes made to Win8, it's a dead horse that has been buried and dug up, beaten, set on fire, drenched in acid, buried and repeated. Thanks, we get it. There are a thousand other threads you can post in.

Also, can we stop comparing this to Win7 please, as we went through this garbage with XP to Vista/7, do we really need to do it again. YES, You Are Correct, Win8 IS NOT Win7. Yes, there are many things that can be done in Win7, why do we need Win8. Fine, again, thousand other threads.

Let this thread be about the positives and what potential uses there are, or how people are using Win8, what apps are you using?
Have you found any that are able to be used cross windows platform (ie. Laptop, Phone, Tablet, Desktop) that maybe does some synching,, an example would be the SmartShopping App (which is still being worked on as far as I know).

Or other software? Uses? Stories of how you use Win8? Please, in a positive way. That doesn't mean you can't say, hey i tried this it didn't work. or I tried this and had these issues. I think you get my meaning.

    Thank you.

With the right tools compiled for RT, one could have a very good tablet for deploying to mobile IT staff.

A theoretical use of Windows RT would be using the USB port in front of an ipad user to connect a Blu-ray drive...
