Transferring Programs from Earlier Versions of Windows

I have the disks for a number of programs I have used in the past on my computers (Windows 95 - Windows 7) I shall try to download some of these to a new HP laptop using Windows 8. What success have other users of this forum had in using old programs? Which programs were successful and which died?

I've only done a few basics so far:

    LibreOffice
    Firefox
Thunderbird [since the MS email program doesn't recognize a POP mail server]

These all seem to work fine on the Win8 desktop. I've also installed some Win7 64-bit printer drivers for an older HP Laserjet and that worked.

I'd certainly be interested in any success/failure reports of other programs.

I successfully use an HP supplied Vista Synaptics touchpad driver for my HP laptop--if that counts.

I am very upset, that my old MGI Photosuite 4 Platinum edition, will not work in W.8. It will not even work from Dropbox.

None of my Sony Corel Paint Shop Photo Pro or Roxie Creator 2011 are supported by Win8, but a real old Paint Shop Pro 7 used on XP and Win7 will install and work on win8. And my try's to contact Sony support just did not get me anywhere. Just happy I have other computers still running Win7. and they will remain Win7 computers.

My Nero Burning ROM works intermittently in Win 8 but ImgBurn works flawlessly.

I was wondering if there is a way to force Windows 8.1 to use older drivers, for example, force a generic Bluetooth adapter driver to use version 6.2.9200 instead of 6.3.9600. I am just trying to troubleshoot a problem and was curious, and wanted to try if its possible.
