Hi All.
I am a newbie and I am from York, in the United Kingdom. Please excuse me if I am posting in the wrong section, but I could not find the section that I required.

I bought a new laptop 4 weeks ago and I upgraded from windows 7. the pc I have now is suppose to be twice as fast as my old laptop and it had double the memory. I am running on an AMD Quad Core. with 800GB memory. so my problem is.

When I am booted up, and I open my windows explorer search bar, I type something in to find, lets say This site. it then does nothing for about 20 seconds then it will come up with the with this site. I will then highlight an section that I want and the little circle in the search bar will go round for about 40 seconds, then open up, I will then click on a part of that section, then I have to wait for the little circle to go round for about another 40 seconds, then it will bring it up, if I click on my Back Arrow, it will once again start to think about it, then the circle will go round yes another 40 seconds and it will go back..... its so frustrating and SLOW, and its suppose to be twice as fast as my old laptop.

Why does it take so long with the little circle going round, is it security checking on the things that I try to search, If so can I turn this checker off ???? why do I have to wait so long on every action command, If anybody can help me, I would be grateful, and I have only used about 30Gb of my memory, so it cant be that what is slowing it down... or is this what windows 8 will be like. :(

Thanks
Christmas Wishes to All.

Have you always had this problem? Did you do an upgrade install of Win8? Have you installed any updates? Have you installed any software that did not come on your machine?

Hi.
I bought the pc with windows 8 already installed from the manufactors, bought it from PC world new. I have only installed updates straight to my pc from Microsoft for windows 8 updates, the only softwear I have installed are a few games and flight sims, that's about it.

Regards
Tankie.

Was the problem there both before and after installing the updates? If it started after the updates, they you could try uninstalling them. Or, you could do a system restore to before you installed them. If you wait awhile, someone may be able to tell you if a specific update may be causing your problem. Do you know how to get to the Win8 Control Panel?

does the problem occur in the metro(start screen) internet explorer and the desktop legacy internet explorer?

can you try chrome/firefox and see if it happens with those as well?

just trying to get a better picture, i've seen this on win 8 laptops when using the metro internet browser but it doesn't happen with the legacy desktop version, due to the security differences and plugins that many sites use that the metro ie doesn't support.

Hi Tankie, could you please tell us whether by any chance Norton trial version was installed when you bought the laptop.

Hi all.
First of all thanks to all you guys who have replied to my problem (Guys covers girls as well) I will try unloading the stuff I put on, and then see how it goes. It seems to happen more when I go into my internet on windows explorer, if I go into Chrome it seems a bit faster. and Yes it did have Norton trial version installed when I bought it, I have not unloaded it. I was wondering if it was Norton checking everything that I search.
Hope weather is ok for you guys over Christmas, here in the UK we have no Snow as yet, we are expecting it next week, it will be coming over from Russia, The Media are calling it the "Beast from the East" or "From Russia with Gloves",
Best Christmas Wishes to All.

Hi tankie1rtr - I would definitely turn off Norton if it's on. Windows Defender might already be on which would be adequate and redundant with Norton. No doubt that would slow things a bit. I am using WD and haven't had any long delay issues on my system.

Guys: acceptable term to apply to "guys and gals" as a group. I know in Spanish it's muchachos (boys), muchachas (girls), and muchachos (boys and girls). :)

A snow storm in the UK? Wow. Keep us posted!

Hi all.
Well I have uninstalled Norton Security via the Uninstall programme in Control Panel and it seems to be a bit faster, I still have Norton online back up installed, do you think it would be wise to uninstall this? also I have not made my Recovery Drive or System Repair Disc. I had forgotten all about them. I suppose I will have to do these tonight, I will now run a defrag seeing as I have removed such a lot of stuff and see how it runs. I will keep you informed. and also may I thank everybody who has taken the time to reply with helpful advice, "Thank You" and may I wish you all a Great & Safe Christmas.

ps. Someone asked me how my username Tankie1rtr means, well I served with the 1st Royal Tank Regiment, British army hence, tankie1rtr. :D

Sounds good, tankie1rtr. My guess is that the defrag won't do much for performance. Although you've done some shuffling, you probably have a lot of free space, and the latency isn't that much for most things.

The online backup could be slowing things down if it's still in the process of doing its first full backup. Those will run a long time (sometimes up to a week) if you have a lot of data. There should be an option to pause it and then you can check performance with it paused to determine the impact.

And although I'm a "yank" I'll thank you nonetheless for your "royal" military service! I have a lot of respect for that. I work at a company that develops military communications equipment. :)

FYI, Win8 will not allow two AV programs to run at the same time. I also will not use Norton anything. I use Bitdefender--which is very good, and I don't notice any slowness problems with it.

Yes, Norton does have a reputation for putting a drag on system performance I think...

I would not run Norton anything. Have you done anything about the updates? I'm not sure that uninstalling them would help. But, keep doing so in mind if things haven't improved significantly given what you have done.

Well, that seems to have worked great. Its running a lot faster since I have unloaded Norton Security. I think I will unload Norton Online Backup, it may even run a bit faster, I think I may watch it for a while see how it goes, then I can mark this up as "Solved"

Just make sure you don't forget to set up some kind of backup. :) At home with Windows 8 I've been using the built-in file backup utility (I forgot momentary what they call it). I use one of my server locations as the backup target.
