severe slowdown/unresponsiveness

I have absolutely no bloody idea...
I'm typing this out on my xbox 360's chat pad so i apologize in advance for any horrendous spelling/grammer... its also 5 am.. so some latitude is appreciated..

-----------

ok, first things first. i tried one of the games that came pre-installed on the computer, a microsoft xbox branded game(you guys know what i mean....) called pinball fx2(i think..) and i liked it...

windows messenger was of course being rather flaky, which it was doin off amd on, so i paid it no mind.

then panda cloud wanted an update and restart, so i allowed it.

first signs of trouble was that weird font issue i described and screenshotted on another thread(on the xbox.. cant link to anything here..) and then i noticed the volume mixer taking a REALLY long time to load... we're talking really low demand stuff like the calculator by the way..

i figure, lets try a restart. nope. takes forever to pull up the desktop. then it wont shutdown. ended up holding the power button down to do a complete shutdown.

bootup today, shes running fine. i spent all day on her. watched the better part of ironman(the live action one) then ejected the disc, went to power down for bed.

its once more doin the slow/unresponsive routine.

i have no idea whats wrong here.

some help would be welcome.

When did your problem begin? Perhaps you can system restore to a point before it began without losing too many installed programs that are functioning correctly. Did you do an upgrade install. Doing so may not work well for you; upgrade installs do not work well for some. If you did an upgrade install, then you could do a clean install if you have an install DVD or other appropriate install medium. Here is a rather complete list of your alternatives if you have system corruption--some of which require some form of install medium.

Startup to installer DVD (or other intall medium);
Choose language, etc.
Hit next
Choose “Repair your computer”
Choose “Troubleshoot” to see these options:
“Refresh your PC
Reset your PC
Advanced options”--Choosing this option gives these additional options:
“System Restore (does not required startup to install medium)
System Image Recovery
Automatic Repair
Command Prompt (does not require startup from install medium)

Refresh your PC—Attempts to solve system related problems without affecting your files. Installed programs will have to be reinstalled except those from the Windows Store. A list of uninstalled programs is provided. Settings will be changed back to defaults. To do a refresh, you will need to have install media.” ”Install media” include an install disc, or course, an ISO, and perhaps a flash drive set up to install.

Reset your PC—Removes everything and reinstalls Win8 . To do a reset, you will need to have install media.” ”Install media” include an install disc, or course, an ISO, and perhaps a flash drive set up to install. (same as a clean install)

System Restore—Attempts to restores your system to an earlier time assuming at least one restore point has been created. Files will be undisturbed, but applications and updates installed after the restore point will be uninstalled (does not require install medium)

System Image Recovery—Attempts to recovers your system using a selected previously made image file

Automatic Repair—Attempts to make repairs needed to allow Win8 to startup properly

Command Prompt—Provides command prompt allowing additional repair options (does not require install medium)----go here to see how, for example, to run the SCF /SCANNOW command

ok. did a full shutdown last night and on bootup today, seems to be running fine, besides messenger's stout refusal to connect.. going to disable that since its more often than not useless due to said refusal..

I'm hoping i've isolated the cause to the pinball app.. uninstalled it last night. we'll see if thats the problem or not.

going to give this a few days. it happens again I'll be calling sony support.

Factory installed usually means factory installed bloatware.

At the very least you should uninstall which ever trial anti virus software that came preinstalled on your system. There may be other OEM installed programs that can cause your system to slow down. Uninstalling which ever ones you won't use may help.

Hello xraiderv1,

As a test, you might see if turning off Fast Startup may help. There have been some users reporting that it has caused shut down and restart issues with them when it is turned on.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-8-a.html

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

since the reset just completed, if it does it again I will.
