I have a computer business and I have already had 7 or 8 people come in cause they cannot do simple things like logging onto a wireless cause cannot find the Icon to seach for available WIreless, etc. People do not want a program they cannot use cause EVERYTHING they have know is gone. Where is the start button? Where is the control panel? Where is the wireless icon? etc etc etc.. I cannot believe your engineers think removing everything that people feel makes them feel in control out of windows is a good idea ! I forsee alot of people coming in wanting 7 put on their PC's like with vista people wanting XP. Bad job boys , bad job !

As far as the start menu is concerned, there are quite a few small 'add-on' apps to get it back Win 7 style.

The wireless Icon has always been there as Mystere indicated unless on some Laptop, there is an on/off switch for Wireless, and if you turn it off, sometimes it does not show the icon. Everything else is there, control panel etc.... except things have been re-arranged.
Try this, hold WIN key and press X, you'll see a little popup on the bottom left corner with control panel in it or if you use a mouse, just move the pointer to bottom left corner and right click, you'll get the same result.

Hi there
in addition to the posts above - remember that at the FIRST LOGON you get a large screen with SET UP WIRELESS shown right in front of your eyes !!!!

While I have issues with Windows 8 finding Wireless isn't one of them. It's in EXACTLY the same place as W7 as others posted.

Cheers

Well .. then the OP and I must be running a Win8 different from the rest of you -- because on MY Win8, the wireless info ONLY shows up in the taskbar if I'm on the Desktop. When the machine boots into the Start screen, there is no wireless icon -- anywhere!

Perhaps this is a settings/config issue -- one that displays the wireless icon on the Start screen -- and if so, I'd like to know what that is.

You just hit on one of the big annoyances with the new modern interface, formally know as metro. It's full screen when open and hides the taskbar. It's also not resizable so as far as Microsoft is concerned it's my way or the highway, you don't get a choice. Your icon's there you just can't see it.

RIGHT -- and folks here should stop telling folks that it's right where it was in Win7 -- because it is NOT ... unless ... you are viewing the Desktop ... which does NOT come up by default. Nowhere in the OPs post did he say that folks were looking at the Desktop. So, we have to presume they were looking at the Start Screen -- which does NOT display the Wireless Icon.

Also, the OP asked about Control Panel. From what I recall (since I don't use the Start Screen), the "gear" icon on the Charms Bar does not offer Control Panel as an option but instead, something different known as Settings. On the Desktop, however, the Charms Bar does offer Control Panel.

And finally, I agree with the perspective that expecting folks to learn key combinations to do simple tasks is a giant step backwards! It takes me back to the days of using WordPerfect with a keyboard template (before they had onscreen menus), and everything was some esoteric key combo. Everything on a MODERN PC interface should be point-and-click or swipe-and-long-press.

I installed this
Welcome to Classic Shell
Although it is an app, it does restore the Win 7 style desktop - complete with start button and Win 7 style menu including access to the Control Panel etc.

When I log in I don't see the Metro screen unless I choose to, and there are a number of customisable settings for style, options etc.

I realize MS should include these options within the OS - but they don't, so I'm happy to use an app to do it.

I use Start8 -- which is my first cut at a start button replacement. OP should consider installing something like this (or classic shell) to have automatic loading of desktop and continued use of Start menu -- until folks get used to the new Win8 Start Screen.

Um, I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything, but technically it is where it is in Windows 7. It's in the notifications area next to the clock on the desktop. Microsoft didn't move its location?

There is a large difference between the issues Vista had and the issues 8 has now. One had performance issues thanks to crappy drivers and OEMs installing it on weak hardware. The other is PEBKAC. Understandable PEBKAC, but PEBKAC nonetheless.

Absolute truth. Anyone who's calling Windows 8 the next Vista has no idea what they are speaking about. Vista's issue was that hardware OEMs weren't up to snuff. If you bought a new computer at VIsta's release without Nvidia drivers and only 512 MB of memory, it would appear that Vista was awful. However, those who understand computers, especially someone running a repair shop, should know the difference between poor OEM support and a typical learning curve.

You are correct, The wireless icon only shows in the task bar of the desktop but is also available in Metro, it is just hidden so if you access the charm bar->Settings then you will see it.

While Vista's and Windows 8's "problems" are compeltely different. I think it might be accurate to say that Windows 8 could be another Vista. I.e. the perception of the OS will be so bad and the rumors and press so negative that it will languish as Vista did until MS "Fixes" it with a future update.

The best way to fix user complaints, school them in the ways of Windows 8. Show them how to do things, show them the new features they get (like picture password), show them new ways to personalize their PC. It's also best to understand the changes so you can explain them better to people, nothing looks worse than a someone running a computer business that's confused by Windows 8! ;) :p

There's an app from HP called Getting Start with Windows 8 that shows you how to do things with Windows 8 and the new things, if you can't be there to show them personally or to keep your sanity.
