Well, I'd already known about the improved security, which is always good, (so long as it doesn't impede the user's experience too much,) but I'm also really liking the tool ribbons in Explorer, mounting ISO files easily, & the updated Task Manager is far more advanced. Overall, there's lots of polish on this OS that gives an experience more like what we imagine when we think about the computers of the future.

So, yeah, it takes a bit of getting used to, but once you do, it's better than any Windows that came before it.

    oo that's quote nice.

i'm no avid supporter of touch i find it somewhat crap to use.

windows 8 while better with touch is usable with a mouse and keyboard, but metro still sucks in functionality which they need to change.

tiss true, windows 8 does have some amazing features and providing you can get used to it quickly is a great o/s.

friend of mine got windows 8, he does like it but he's running 3 monitors in eyefinity so his metro is at 5760x1080 across all 3 screens believe me when i say this looks nasty, not metro's fault either but just the problem and the sole reason i hate metro's lack of options to resize and open on different screens.

if microsoft fix that aspect of metro then hands down it will be far superior to the start menu, and will make metro far more enjoyable to use in many different scenario's even for their surface owners who want to plug into an additional screen/projector.

    Forum Membership Numbers

On Nov 9th, and now on Dec 15th, these were the figures for forum membership numbers.

    Nov 9th. Windows7Forums: 231,818 ........ Windows8Forums: 10,722

    Dec 14th: Windows7Forums: 233,204 ...... Windows8Forums: 13,594

On Nov 9th, based on Windows 7 having been on the market approximately 3 years, and assuming W7F gained no new members, W8F would need to have averaged 6,141 new members/month, for 36 consecutive months, to equal the W7F forum level reached after being released 3 years.

In the past 9 weeks, W8F has only increased 2,872 new members. In that period it needed 7,085 new members. So it's actually fallen behind another 4,213 new members needed in that period.

Add to that, W7F in the same period gained 1,386 new members. And that = 48.25% of the gain of W8.

Not bad for a so called out dated, slow, boring OS released over three years ago; as compared to the New Future OS with so many super duper features, ease of use, yadda, yadda, yadda .... Hmmmmm?

Interesting. I liked those new features, too. They could have easily been part of a Windows 7 service pack. The ribbon, for example, was already part of Office 2010 programs (much to the dismay of users who couldn't find their favorite commands any more, without much warning). But none of that is Metro related (I tend to think of the Metro and Metro app design as the centerpiece of Windows 8, which distinguishes it most from its predecessors).

Exactly. They aspects are part of the OS core, not the Modern interface. It's the interface that is drawing the criticism, not the OS itself.

Actually, it's Metro I was referring to when I spoke of "polish" on the ui; that, & the little tricks like how one can double-click on the vertical arrows when hovering above the top border to vertical-maximize a window, a prime example.

My thoughts on windoze 8 the system is much improved over 7 BUT the metro ui is pure trash because it is not sizable and full screen only. I will not be pushing it but pushing Win7.

If all you are basing this on is the GUI and it's size, then you are doing everyone a disservice.

I wonder if some people even realize that there's a nice menu on the left side where you can choose multiple open apps, either by pointing the mouse in the top-left corner or by pressing Win+Tab. Now, what I do wish is that you could have one app take up half the screen while another app takes the other. As it is, one app takes up a sliver of space as you're trying to use them both. Wouldn't mind having the Desktop open on one side and an app on the other, but instead one window is so narrow, that it's basically useless.

Hi Guys. I am considering upgrading from windows vista to windows 8, but one thing I am not sure of, are games that play on Vista or XP ( Myst Series. Rhem.etc) playable on windows 8? I have too many games to mention here, but would be grateful if anyone could help me. Much appreciated. Thanks....
As title really. What are the chances of Windows 8 being to Windows 7 what Vista was to XP? Everyone seems to be very happy with Windows 7 so do you not think that Windows 8 will flop and everyone will just keep with 7?
