Can Windows 8 use Windows 7 folders?

I am running W8 & W7 in a dual boot setup. I am aware that folders like My Music can be moved to a different drive in both W7 & W8, what I'd like to know is if I move W7's My Music folder to, say the E: drive, can I tell W8 to look in the same folder?

Hello Old Dog, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You might consider this below instead to be able to access the files from your libraries with the files actually located where you like instead. This way you will not have to worry about any potential issues that come with moving user folder locations. You can have the same folder included in the library of both Windows 7 and Windows 8 at the same time.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Brink,

It had occurred to me that what you suggest would work better, but I didn't know how; now I do.

I really appreciate the help! As the handle implies, I've been around since before Windows and so I haven't decided if I really want and/or need Windows 8, yet.

    Again, thanks,
    Richard

I've moved those Documents, Music, etc folders in Windows 7 and Windows 8 under the location tab, and pointed them both to the same folder on a separate partition. The only glitch I think its caused is on a reinstall of one of the OS's. I'll get a "You don't have access" or You don't have permission" can't remember which one at the moment, when I try to access one of them from the just installed OS. I just click continue and I'm in and that prompt goes away and I never see it again for that folder. It will do it once for each folder and then stop.

I don't know if this will work for everyone but I was already storing my music, videos and documents on my D drive. In Windows 8, I just left clicked and dragged the folder icons (move) to the folders that contained the Windows 7 folders. It queried me that the folder existed and I just accepted the default. This method always merges the folders and if it contains files with identical names will prompt you as to what to do with the files (replace, keep, or keep both).

It updated Windows 8 and works just like Windows 7 does. Couldn't have been easier.
