bootmgr missing

    bootmgr missing

After having to reinstal win 8 due to stupidity on my part I am now getting the bootmgr missing.

I have tried doing what it says in the MS page to rebuild it, but it still says it's missing.

Note Use the Bootrec.exe tool to troubleshoot "Bootmgr Is Missing" issue. If rebuilding the BCD does not resolve the startup issue, you can export and delete the BCD, and then run this option again. By doing this, you make sure that the BCD is completely rebuilt.

To do this, type the following commands at the Windows RE command prompt:

    • bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    • c:
    • cd boot
    • attrib bcd -s -h -r
    • ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    • bootrec /RebuildBcd

I have followed this to the letter, but it still says bootmgr missing on startup.

Under command prompt C:\Boot I now have

    20,480 BCD
    77,824 bcd.old

(along, of course, with a load of other stuff)

    So it is there

    I have 3 discs

vol 1 is d: and is for data (d:data)
vol 2 is c: and is for software, (this contains the windows)
vol 3 is f: and is just a data backup from d: (f: data backup)

all the commands run under bootrec are successful and it finds the windows installation under c:

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks, Steve

ps for those interested in the stupid part...
my ISP wanted me to check the download speed in safe mode and the way I got into SF was by altering the msconfig file.

Trouble then started when it would not recognise my password, or the 4 digit quick code I had chosen.

So that was it as I then could not get back to the normal instal.

Reinstall kept on hanging, even when I reloaded 7 then tried 8 on top, no go.

Turned out it did not like the hdmi cable to the tv attached, when I removed this all went ok but in the meantime after speaking to MS support for hours they had me reformat c: to get rid of anything windows.

So this morning managed to get win 8 to instal, but as soon as I tried to start, it come with the bootmgr missing deal.

Try this, it works for me...Boot your Windows DVD and enter command line...by choosing repair options, then do these commands in order:

    bcdedit
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /rebuildbcd

    Hope it works for you.

Under what command prompt? Was is X:\Sources, C:, or C:\Boot?

    Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve you do it under X:\Sources...although I think it should works in either because X is just a virtual drive...

Think I am just going to try to re-instal it, yet again.

I think I have tried every possibility that bootrec gives me....

bcdedit is in the c:\Windows\System32 directory so X drive probably has paths set to find it...so you are right when you say it does not work from C:\ ...so X:\Sources would be the best bet, else change directory to C:\Windows\System32

I've just started the re-instal, but if I still have a bootmgr problem, I'll go to C:\Windows\System32 to do the bootrec commands.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    The re-instal didn't fix it!

Can't understand why a nice fresh instal wouldn't load the bootmgr correctly.
