Excellent, thanks, used Diskpart and clear all, loaded W8 and boots up every time.

    Thank you so very much,

The only thing I can think of from this angle is that your BIOS is not reading the correct disk at boot.
A new installation should write the MBR automatically unless you have specified some other config yourself.
You can check this easy if you have a bootable gParted disk and look at the file system on your disk(s).
Press F9 (on some BIOSs) at boot to select a disk to boot from or edit your BIOS disk boot sequence, it is possible that your BIOS has lost the settings. Recommendation is to set BIOS back to default.

Sorry I did not see you got sorted. Enjoy Windows 8, I think it is great, even with the Metro Start.

No worries, problem with "clear all" even though it sorted the install it then affected activation as it was an upgrade and now there was no copy of Win 7 anywhere.

Anyway, rung MS up and because of the original install problems they sorted out the activation for me.

Hi. I had the bootmgr missing error as well and itried your fix and now Ihave a different error message: An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system.

    Here is what originally happened.

In my stupidity, I went and set my other partition as active thinking it would make searching and drive access faster. I am dual booting from Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 8 Pro. Windows 7 was the original OS, and I partitioned My single HDD and loaded Windows 8 Pro to Dual boot.

So I first got the Bootmgr is missing error, tried your fix and now I get the second error that I listed...

Any suggestions? By the way, I decided to bite the bullet and re install Windows 8, but it will not recognize my key(That is what the error said, not that it was invalid, it didn't recognize it).

    Update

I did a automated windows 8 repair and now it just boots into windows 7. I am going to try and re activate the windows 8 partition and see how it goes...

    Update

Well there is no option to make the partition active. it sees it but...

Hi, i recently did an update on Directory Opus which I use in place of file explorer, only to get 'Missing Bootmgr' on reboot. I tried every option i could see on win8 forums, but to no avail. Alt+Ctl+Del did nothing - leaving the machine stuck on the A+C+D+ page. I could not get into bios to check that i have a dvd selected to boot from. I tried each drive and it did not see the disc. after several days of this, i got up this morning and decided to try to reinstall win8 (hoping the maching would see the disc! i have two win8 discs - i run it on two machines. so, i put a disc in each of my drives, booted up and went to have breakfast. to my amazment, when i come back i had my usual logon screen up - entered my password and all looks good (also Directory Opus has updated too!) as expected, i am highly chuffed, but i do wonder how this worked??
