problem with startup programs running (some as admin)

I seem to have a problem with some programs not running at startup.

Found out some of them need to be run as admin to even work. So changed the exe to run in admin mode and that worked, but not for startup.

Then with a shortcut tried properties-advanced- run as administrator and placed it in C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

That did not work,- taskmanager start-up has it as enabled, and in the registry its under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run

Tried also to make a schedule to strat the program on either strat or log in, but no go.

Anexample is a autohotkey exe and run it as admin, that will not strat.

Win 8 64bit pro with windows defender.

I just noticed this occurrence too. I had some apps that didn't autostart although they were put in the start-up folder and I figured that startup didn't work in windows 8 and that the folder was just an "old relic" from windows 7, but then I noticed that some apps did start and then it struck me that those apps that wouldn't autostart were set to be run as administrator. I disabled it and rebooted and it worked. This is really weird and very annoying as the paranoid security in windows 8 forces me to run a lot of windows 7 apps as administrator to get them to work properly. E.g. there's a touchpad server that I use to have my android phone as a touchpad that I have to run as administrator to get it to work within XBMC. If I don't run the touchpad server as admin then it stops working when I open XBMC. There's a lot of other similar weird stuff that only gets solved by using the run as admin solution.

Hello Cixoos and mertzi,

This is normal. Programs are not allowed to run elevated (run as administrator) automatically at startup for security purposes.

You could use the method in the tutorial below as workaround, but it must be done exactly for it to work. Basically you create an elevated task in Task Scheduler that runs the program, create a shortcut to run the elevated task, then create a new task to run the shortcut at startup. It seems like double work, but it will not work unless the second task is used like in the tutorial.

Hope this helps, :)

hello brink! I read about this but I tried a different way, I created a batch file to run the executable (which is set to run as administrator in properties) and put a shortcut to the bat-file in the startup folder. I tried this with the touchpad server I mentioned before and it seems to work as it should now but I'm not sure that it really was because of the run as administrator solution. Is there any way to see if a program that is already running is doint it as admin from the task manager or any other way?

edit: I didn't think of the easy way, I closed the touchpad server and unticked the run as admin for the exe file and started it again and now it didn't work within XBMC so it was because of the run as admin it worked, and thus the shortcut to the batch file works!

I've noted that Stardock's Fences, used to organize icons on the desktop, won't run right away. The desktop comes up but the fences don't until you click on the desktop. But clicking on the desktop can't give it admin privileges so I suspect I will just have to wait for an update from Stardock. Strange.

I'm using Fences without any problems, and it doesn't need to admin privs. Of course i'm still running the older version, not the new one.. so I don't know if your problem is related to 2.0

well, my solution was to manually add it to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

That would run the .exe set as administrator at startup

Im using fences also, and it works here on startup. Have you checked the quick hide settings?

This worked for me, but I had to point the path at a shortcut that was set to run as Administrator:
