From that article:

According to tech research firm StatCounter, about 1 percent of the world's 1.5 billion or so personal computers - making a total of around 15 million - are actually running Windows 8.

Be interesting how many of the 1.5bn actually go for it in the end.

I believe about 650m went for win7.

We shall see.

It can't be compared in terms of popularity.

If you were a manufacturer buying windows licenses 3 yrs ago - you would be buying just for desktops/laptops.

If you are a manufacturer buying windows license now - you buy for desktop/laptops and for tablets. You would probably want at least 50% more.

The market is bigger now - there are simply more devices.

Interesting that oem machines in the last 6 mths had a $14.99 upgrade deal.

How many machines is that? 100m , 150m perhaps.

If only 15m have actually installed win 8, that isn't exactly an enormous take up at the give away price.

Remember Win7 upgrades were free for OEM purchases in the pre-sales period (which I think was 3 months beforehand), and Win8 license upgrades are not. The fact there are so many licenses (upgrades and otherwise) being sold is actually interesting.

I am not sure the $14.99 makes any difference. If they fancy the upgrade , they will do it - free or $15 isn't going to put many people off.

There is also the $40 for anybody deal - you didn't get that with win7 - as I recall.

I don't know about so many licenses.

If there are 15m installs in the first month - how many will there be in the second month?

Another 15 m - perhaps - but the launch brouha is over, and these are possibly the busiest months of the year.

It doesn't sound too bad - but it's along way short of Stevie B's idea of 500m in a year, which I saw quoted somewhere.

Windows 8 number will grow as people buy new machines since they will all come with it installed. I wonder how long MS will allow OEM builders to ship with Windows 7 instead of Windows 8, giving the customer a choice?

Yes, it is a given.

If you need to buy a new machine - you will be inflicted with win8.

( Unless you have $1000 to spend - then you will quite likely go for a mac ).

I suppose that is why we are trying to find ways of making it tolerable.

It is not as bad since I made some changes to the installation media and found a variety of methods to avoid the crapware and enable some sort of decent navigation system.
