....but I wouldn't want to marry it.

Well, that looks like it, until at least SP1.

The more I play with W8 the more I like it.

BUTT......

The more I see wrong with it.

1/ Legal copies won't activate, or deactivate when updates are installed.

2/ Their obsession with having control of the BIOS/EUFI.

3/ The blatant monetisation of the whole show.

4/ This bloody 'cloud'.

5/ I LOVE the Enterprise RTM trial. WTF can't I BUY and activate the bloody thing?

6/ CP Aero and the lack of customisability....enough said.

....and more. I COULD go on (but won't).

WHY are they so intent on driving people away?

Win 7 is NOT quite the OS that 8 could be, but is better as things currently stand.

And at least 7 isn't trying to take control of my machine.

ADDENDUM: I really couldn't give a stuff about the 8 interface, put a start orb back
and it's simply superb. And it's easily and productively useable even without it.

    Borderline pathetic.
I have to agree with you there. The more I use it the more "Why did they do that" moments I have.
At first they were WTF moments. ;)

I don't think anyone is trying to drive anyone away, it seems one side is content in thinking they're being driven away...

1. Your activation issue seems to be a glitch that needs ironing out. Windows 8 is new, and like with Windows 7 when it came out, it also had its fair share of weird things like this.

2. Don't buy a Windows 8 PC, or just workaround it. Windows 8 isn't really trying to take over your PC, it doesn't have logic. Yet.

3. There really isn't a lot of monetization so far to be concerned with. Now google on the other hand....

4. Whip out an umbrella and take no part in the cloud.

The thing about Windows is the fact it can be configured, personalized, arranged, tweaked, customized, and every other cool thing can be done to it. No one is going to be taking that away in the known future. Start Screens can be tweaked and changed, it can have a third party start menu (why?...) different anti-virus software other than Defender, Taskbars can be changed to be where ever and act differently, and on...

I guess it depends on what it considered 'customized'.

What you describe sounds like Linux - not Windows.

it can have a third party start menu (why?...)

Because for some (like myself), it improves productivity.

different anti-virus software other than Defender,

That's not really a tweak, nor even falls under customization.

Taskbars can be changed to be where ever and act differently, and on...

It can be moved, yes - but I'm not sure what you mean by 'act different'.

No, if you do some looking into of what can be done with Windows, it will be done by a third party, which nonetheless is still customization. People can put images on their Start Screen background, change tile colors and accent colors to their liking, they can put image tiles, custom mouse cursors can be used, different sounds can be put in, people can make their window color white while the Taskbar is red, people can make the boot screen in Windows to be something totally else, and even put a Hello Kitty skin all over everything. It's not Linux, it's Windows + third party input. :D

Different anti-virus than Windows is something that can be arranged if the user wants and ends us being customized since it's no longer stock default Windows.

What I mean about the Taskbar, is that you can use it other than how Microsoft has been forcing you to use it since 7. You can upgroup the items that are grouped, make it act like vista's and look like vista's Taskbar, you can unpin everything on it and just have it as a classic Taskbar, you can have it the 7 style bar but with nothing pinned and with everything ungrouped so what you have open becomes little glass tiles all over the Taskbar. You can pin some things on it, and keep things ungrouped so when you click open that item, it opens like if it was the classic Taskbar. LOTS of different arrangements can be with it, even without third party intervention.
