Hi,
My name is Minal.
I have this small business set up of import and export of Machinery.
We have 9 laptops and 1 desktop.
I was thinking to buy license of Windows 8 for all the 9 laptops and desktop that we have.
I read many comparison charts and explanations on windows 8 but I am still confused, whether to buy just plain simple Windows 8 or should I buy Windows 8 Pro ??

Kindly suggest if windows 8 pro is suitable for business purpose of should I be buying only windows 8 ??

Awaiting revert.

Regards,

Minal

Hi there
IMO you'd be better off with some type of Server product and then run the laptops as licensed users from the company server -- it I'm sure would be cheaper than messing around with 10 retail versions.

Your best bet would be to speak to an Ms Licensing person or Ms Pre Sales on your best choices as a wrong move could cost you more money than you need to spend.

I don't know what type of software is running on your PC's but you'll need some sort of "Back office" system -- Accounts, export / import papers etc etc. and this would be ideally suited to run from your central "server" with the laptops as clients.

As much as I love Windows 8, you should run a trial to see if it is better for your business than Windows 7.

Win8 Pro better IMO. In general, I don't think you would have too many issues with Win8 given the business uses you mention. Still, everyone definitely would have some getting used to Win8 to do. Win8 has two main modes: Desktop mode and Metro mode. Once you get used to how and what you can do from Desktop versus Metro things should go pretty smoothy. However, many of us, I think it is fair to say, don't find Metro to be very useful and, thus, find it annoying to have to encounter Metro too often. In this regard, while in Desktop mode, you can with practice, creativity, and possibly third-party software eventually learn to use Win8 in pretty much the same way as Win7, for example.

Newer is not always better ... and this is especially true of Win8.

I support your trying it out to see how well it works for you before rushing into upgrading your existing PCs. You may find that Win8 brings nothing useful to the table -- or you may find just the opposite. Only trying it out for yourself is going to show its value to you.

What version of Windows are they now running and why do you think installing Windows 8 will make those computers any better to use then the Windows OS they are now running?

First rule of anything. It is isn't broken STOP trying to fix it.

I agree where are you OS wise and what do you want to achieve?

Volume licencing for windows 8 is a minimum of 25 clients so not usable here.

But ATM cheap upgrades as long as it is not going to break any older software you use.
