What are all the ticks for?

Just a day into using windows 8 and a question: on my desktop items (and files such as photos) a little box with a tick in - or sometimes no tick appears..... what is that all about?

    Welcome to Eight Forums, nixmith86.

Are you saying desktop or Start Screen?

in desktop mode, there is a little curved arrow at the bottom of an icon - they had that on previous windows I'm sure, but there is now a little box at top of each item that I was just wondering the purpose.

You're refering to icons. The curved arrow means a shortcut. If it's a file, there is no arrow.

My Enterprise Eval edition just expired and I haven't loaded my Pro as of yet, so I don't have a copy of 8 to look at and not sure. Right click on one that has and one that doesn't to see any difference in the properties.

Or hopefully someone else will come along.

If you don't like them, you can disable them :Shortcut Arrow - Change, Remove, or Restore - Windows 7 Forums

    Hello Nic,

It sounds like you are describing the check box to select items with. The tutorial below can show you how to turn that on and off at will.

Check Boxes to Select Items - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

    Hope this helps,
