Is Windows 8 sucking up my Gigabytes of Internet?

Hello all, I'm new here and hope you can help with this one:

I recently upgraded my PC - I had to pay a bit more than for the download to get the disc because my internet is via 3 using the portable broadband (mi-fi). I get 15 Gb per month and if I go over that it gets v. expensive.

In the past 15 Gb has been fine - I use the net a lot, but just general surfing and as long as I stay away from iPlayer and youtube! its fine. However, I think Windows 8 may be a problem unless I change some settings. Do the live tiles (weather, store etc.) constantly work with the interent sort of in the background, could this be eating up my data? I have been getting through this month's Gigabytes at quite a pace and I'm not sure why.

    Nic

P.S. Is there an app that can monitor my data usage yet for Win 8?

I'm not sure about Windows but you can easily check data usage on a smart phone.

However 15 GB a month sounds a rather "Tiddly" allowance so I'd look and see if there are better deals -- I know in the UK these 4 : Virgin, SKY, BT and I think PlusNet all offer some competitive rates - especially to new customers switching from another supplier.

I've probably downloaded 40 GB already today and that's just on ONE Saturday Morning. I couldn't manage with only 15 GB a Mo. I use a proxy server to get Sky Go (SKY SPORTS -- LIVE FOOTIE etc and BBC TV) and just streaming these at HD quality consumes Bandwidth -- but I have a decent supplier and it's uncapped -- they don't even talk about "Fair usage" policies either.

    Cheers

Wow Jimbo, that's made me jealous!!!

But if I describe more about my situation it may explain things. Last year I had to move to a new place quick, due to work. The flat I took cheap has no phone access, it is just a basic room with electric and other basics. So the only option at that time for internet was with 3 - their portable mi-fi and it is pretty good, it allows me to take my internet out and about, to use on a Wi-Fi tablet.

I would like more Gigabytes, especially to get some apps for win 8, plus I dare not put my Xbox online for fear of eating up my allowance. I assume those other providers you mention with 40Gb deals, all need to come to the house through a regular phone connection or a TV cable service or something, if so - it would be no good for me.

    Hi there

You could probably take out a BT Wifi subscription which allows you access to BT's public Wifi service -- it won't be superfast but it should be cheaper than what you are paying now and you can use it wherever there are BT Hotspots -- I know in London there are loads because that's what I use when I travel to London -- cheaper than paying to use Hotels often overloaded Wifi service too --it's cheaper using Wifi than the Data roaming especially if you don't come from the country concerned and having to pay overseas network charges.

    cheers
