What's all the fuss about? The Start menu is there it's just in a different format! Eventually we'll all get used to it! I personally prefer the Start Orb but nothing lasts forever. MS had to come up with a way to interact with other devices, and this is what we get, Windows 8. It's pretty much the same as Windows 7 but most people don't agree. The new start screen is here to stay in my opinion, and I think we all need to realize that fact. Onwards and upwards as the saying goes!

I don't need to get used to it, as long as there are tweaks that allow me to import the Windows 7 start menu into Windows 8. If the time comes when that kind of tweak is no longer available I will switch to another OS that I am more comfortable with.

We've all been arguing about this for quite awhile now. Some like it, some don't. As for myself I find that it's pretty much just Win7 with another subsystem in the background. Aside from that it works fine. I'm about done with the debate myself, I've got other things to do.

(Now turning to monitoring the forum to help user's get on with using the thing instead of debating whether it's any good or not). <g>

Agreed! It's like some declared war over split milk. The Start Screen is more or less like a new Desktop that can be loaded with dozens of tiles, much like the Desktop was once used to load dozens of icons.

Funny thing is we already now what it is, it take few months if not years to know what Vista and ME was. Actually many peoples don't even know what Vista was until they switch to 7, so it was not as bad as Windows 8

Maybe I haven't spent enough time with the various tiles. Some of them are OK, but, in general, using them seems to be burdensome (or they are trivial). My prime example is trying to use IE under the Metro style. Please enlighten me on how to use IE effective under this style constraint.

I'm guessing you might have Flash issues or rendering issues with metro IE. I'd just stick to using the Desktop version if the metro one gives you bothers.

First, go open the Desktop version of IE, you can do that with the little tool icon within metro IE when you right click. Then, open the Desktop IE's settings, which is a little cog wheel like thing. Hit Internet Options, a window will open up, from there hit Programs, and hit Open Internet Explorer tiles on the desktop. Change how IE opens links to open in the desktop.

I've personally seen a friend use their Start Screen more or less as a Most Frequently Used list of the start menu from 7. She uses jumplists though so about half of what would be on Start isn't there like Libraries. Actually, if you hit up the link in my signature, it not only gives suggestions and tips on how to install Windows 8, but there is a section that speaks of how to customize it as well. Part of which that is on there, is pinning Desktop items to Start. I for one use this quite often, and it baffles me that Microsoft didn't put these Desktop tiles there, but oh well. To pin things to Start, you will need to be in the Desktop. Find something like a Library, folder, hard drive, or even a Control Panel item; then right click and hit Pin to Start. A new tile appears of which you can move around and group and such.

This as PAGES of different people's Start Screen. It really matters on how YOU want things to work. I for example, use Start as my main launcher, don't have anything pinned on the Taskbar anymore. So I have everything I need on my Start Screen, from Libraries to data recovery tools and Office, with apps of course.

And the apps that come preinstalled with Windows are ok, they seem to be more or less replacements for gadgets. Bing Weather is the main app I've seen used across a few different friend's Windows 8 PCs. There are some good ones out there, some will need more tweaking and development. Remember, the Windows Store just went official just a couple of months ago, so it won't be vast and perfect.

Ha, "Spilled milk", a funny choice of words, and it fits well! When the argument is weather spilled milk is a good thing or not and now that it's been spilled we'll just get used to it and even how licking it off the table is just as good or better than drinking it from the glass used to be then yes, there are valid "arguments" to be made. :D

Much like the disaster that was the Kin, MS /could still/ backtrack on it's forced inclusion and make metro and the desktop live together as one like t should have been to start with rather than fighting back and forth. As long as there is that hope, people should voice their honest opinions.

It is very inefficient and unergonomic for mouse users.

Start menu is vastly superior for that.

You don't get the choice, because the start screen carries the bloatware, adware, and exhortations to go online to MS.

Spoken by someone who has never had a problem with hand-eye coordination, or poor motor reflex skills. Menus can be difficult to use even if you have good skills. I can't count the number of times I've had to start over when traversing a multi-level menu because I moved off of it, or a window popped up while I was navigating.

In fact, menus are probably the WORST ergonomic feature of previous versions of Windows.

There is simply no valid argument that you can make about the start menu ergonomically. I don't care how bad you might think the Start Page is ergonomically, it's always going to be better than a menu. Always. They are terrible usability. You may find them more convenient for you, but this is *NOT* an ergonomic argument. Particularly when talking about anyone with a disability.
