    Am I doing something wrong?

Whenever I use 8 I find myself swapping apps into the three none sizeable gaps getting frustrated and then just using desktop mode?
Or I start from tiles then any program I need to access like outlook or other office apps I switches to desktop anyway?
From desktop mode if I use reader it changes to tiles mode again.
Is it really this utterly disjointed?
Anyway to change my upgrade license to 7 again?
    Also miss start menu.

Hi 'stratoc', Can't say you're doing anything wrong, I just believe you've misunderstood the concept of the Start Screen. In my humble opinion it replaces the Start Button and it's up to you how you arrange your 'apps/tiles' in it to suit your way of working. Once you've done that you can use the Metro Apps within the Start Screen or click on a 'tile' to have it open within and be taken to the Desktop; or click on the Desktop Tile. The choice is yours.
At present I use the Metro apps but seldom and on entering the Start Screen I click on my Thunderbird Tile which opens in Desktop allowing me to check mail. Now I'm in Desktop I open my Waterfox browser there and tend to stay in Desktop having my most frequently used programs still pinned to the Taskbar (just as they were in W7). However, if I require a non-pinned to taskbar program I open the Start Screen with the Windows Key, select the required program (just as I would have via Start Button) and it then opens back in the Desktop again. You will also find that by Right clicking in the bottom left hand corner it produces a menu to all the Power Options including Control Panel/Task Manager/Device Manager/ Programs & Features etc and is very handy.
Stick with it, spend a little time arranging your Start Screen and you will soon reap the benefits of Windows 8.
I really like it and hope you will soon come to enjoy it too.
    Good luck.

Hi 'ecevit'. Short answer - I don't know. But why should they? If you must have the Start Button then there is available a small program to enable this. On the other hand I strongly believe the Start Screen to not only replace the Start Button but to be an advancement. In the Start Button your 'all programs' are laid out in a manner prescribed by Microsoft. While the Start Screen allows YOU to determine what you include and how it is displayed, grouped and named. This gives you total control and ensures the location of programs much easier to find.

I'm a little confused, are you saying that it's a bit disjointed to be on the Desktop and then to Reader and then back?

If so, simple fix. Type in Default Programs at the Start Screen, and change program defaults for things you want Desktop apps to open. Adobe Reader (which is in the Windows Store and can be downloaded from Adobe) can be your default for pdf files. Windows Media Player or some other player can be used to play music on the Desktop. It's really more or less picking your poison with Windows 8. You can choose to have Desktop apps open, or you can use the metro apps to open things.

Thanks for the tip, I downloaded Sumatra (my favourite pdf reader) What I meant was it's almost like having two operating systems. A lot more clicks involved than previous versions.

It's kind of like two OS's in one. To me, I see the new aspect of Windows 8 with the new apps and such as just an extension of Desktop. Most of the times, I think the only clicking that seems to be done WAY more with 8 is right clicking to bring up the app bars, and selecting tiles.

It's a bit shocking at first, but you get used to it. It's something new. When I first experienced that, it took be off guard a bit. Since then, it's been smooth sailing. I have things open in the Desktop if I'm in the Desktop. Things I want to open within apps I do it within the apps. I'd also suggest to make use of the Start Screen. If you do most of everything on the Desktop, pin Desktop items to it like Libraries, folder, hard drives, or even Control Panel items. Again, you right click (you do that a lot ) on that item from the Desktop and hit Pin to Start on the context menu. A new tile is made and you can drag that around or group them and name those groups.

    Post your Start Screen!

This thread can give you an idea of what can be done with the Start Screen with tiles and even the colors. Ever since Decor8 was discovered, things got interesting!

Even Windows 8 itself has help tutorial! Open up the Settings charm (Start key and C or mouse over it) and Help is right there.

Then there is Eight Forums here....

You are not doing anything wrong. The issue is not with you it is the interface. Have a read of this article.

A lot of people do not like it. If Metro does not grow on you, it can be fixed by downloading a start menu replacement.

At the moment I like this one the best, but it is not free costs $3 for two computers.
