All you need to do is install Classic Shell and you never have to go to the tiles interface if you don't want to do so. You'll start in a Windows 7 interface, work in a Windows 7 interface and shut down in a Windows 7 interface. Microsoft didn't want that, but you can have your cake and eat it as well.

I don't know who you are referring to as Windows "haters".

Of course, people will post up comments like - that sucks - or that was a stupid thing for them to do , etc.

It is normal human expression. I don't think they sit at home fuming, plotting and hating.

Many of us have been long time Windows supporters - some of us even have MS awards of various kinds. Hardly "haters".

    Quite the opposite.

It would have been better if MS had paid more attention to the feedback they got before releasing Win8. Instead , they wanted to go ahead and do what they thought would be best for them, and the customers would "get used to it".

The launch didn't seem to go off terribly well, and now some weeks later, we are getting the kind of reviews posted above.

    It doesn't surprise me.

If MS want to stay relevant , they will have to listen to what their customers want.

The worst thing to do is try and insist everybody "must" go along with it - if not, there must be something wrong with you - you are frightened of change, or out of touch. That is completely the wrong approach.

It is for MS to do what their customers want.

I am a serious creative professional and find Windows 8 to be a flat UI that offers little. Also at the same time, it is necessary to enter several spreadsheets and keep the financial times live feed running and my bank is sending a fax and I need to process a few pdfs and run powerpoint and the office database all on my 24 inch screen simultaneously. Of course touch is pointless and the desktop is unavailable because of the metro.

I think this is one of the first reviews which basically put into words exactly why I don't like the visuals of windows 8. It's not just for aesthetic-sake but for functionality as well. The flatness causes a lot of confusion visually for the user in differentiating certain tasks, their hidden features and such give the user no hints at what to do. There are some gestures that could be reworked for sure. As for you buying the laptop I think if you are getting one in stores that come with an operating system you are basically stuck with windows 8 unless they have a CD for windows 7 as well. That's not to say windows 8 is a bad system it's decent. Try it out and see if you like it. That's the best way to figure out if it's right for you.

I agree with the original review. I am a power user. I build 10 desktops per year (approx) and will be using Windows 7 for those. I can see what MS tried to do with Windows 8, but I predict it will be a fringe OS. I do not believe it will be used in business environments. Windows 7 is a solid OS (like XP) I can't seem to get into Windows 8. I have tried it on a desktop and it reminds me of learning to use a new phone. I have never felt this bad about a Windows OS until now.

I'm sure some will thrive with it.....not me.
