With Sinofsky gone it's an absolute certainty that the Start Menu is coming back. It's not just my opinion, check out today's Tom's Hardware.
What I would like to know is, are all the die hard supporters of W8 going to condem Microsoft when they do this?

What tripe. The article is full of BS and speculation, none of it with a basis in reality.

No, Microsoft will NOT be bringing the start menu back. There are too many reasons for them not to do so. 1) a start menu doesn't work with a touch based interface. 2) A start menu destroys their entire branding with windows 8. 3) they can't do both because it will be even MORE confusing to people.

On top of that, the article makes assumptions that are incorrect. First, there was never any official stance that DirectX 11.1 wouldn't be available to Windows 7.

Second, the reason for DirectX 11.1 on 7 is to allow IE10 to function on Windows 7. It wasn't because anyone demanded it, it was because they needed it to deliver IE10.

Third, it's only a subset of DX 11.1, it doesn't include any features that depend on WDDM 1.2 (like stereoscopic rendering).

Finally, no. The start menu will not be coming back (at least not from Microsoft).

At some time ago (not too long ago) Microsoft said "DirectX 11.1 will not coming to Windows 7".
So Microsoft did already said DX11.1 will not coming to W7, but it comes after Sinofsky's departure.

It's possible to Microsoft to bring back Start Menu, of course with some tweaks (Bigger buttons, Flat Interface) that suites Windows 8 Perfectly.

They will not change direction in the middle of the stream. They are heading for touch UI popularized by others. When all software is written in the Modern interface, say goodbye to the desktop as well. There will be no need for a Win32 portal. Navigation will continue to be possible without touch screen with mouse, keyboard, and touch pad. Voice command may reach maturity very soon also.

Welcome to the new age of computing, ladies and gentlemen.

Is that your real big problem ? good thing some have more open mind, you simply add a menu to disable or enable it. Oh boy will I get a Noble price for that ? When you want to work to find a solution, you can find them.

Mystere, I wonder sometime if you are not Sinofsky

It's annoying to have to download a third party software. I will prefer it's built in Windows so it can be update at the same time I update Windows. Third party applications are more prone to additional bugs. For now I'm using Classic start menu, not for the menu but for remove the hot spot. I don't need a new menu the start page do the job in my case. So I have to unnecessary mod my OS just to disable something I don't need.

    Um...no.

    Earlier versions were certainly backwards-compatible.

New releases would need the latest(?) DirectX, but games that required
the earlier versions would almost always be able to run.

I can remember several versions on my W95/98 and XP machines.

The current situation has only been the case since Vista, IIRC.
    You're right.

I think they needed a good reason to ditch XP and directx9 for good. This was one of them.

    from the article:
"Clearly, if the product isn't doing well, they could come up with a service pack that restores the Start Menu," Hilwa says.
At least I'm not the only one who thinks this.

    Nice.
Either way: start (menu or screen) is start. You get used to it and then they decide to change it.

So now what? I'm now good with the start screen and they bring the start menu back????
It took me days to get the look and shortcuts right, no way! I'm formatting...

Ok ok, i'll use both, but that will be like a car with 2 steering wheels, crap.
Start Screen (left) and Start Menu (right). Premium compatibility in US and UK at the same time.

    What's next?
    He he he.
