Solved Video Thumbnails are gone and replaced by Icon
My Video Thumbnails in Windows (File) Explorer have gone and been replaced by the generic Icon for the program I select to play the video files (VLC, GOM etc). It's happened to my AVI and MPG files on ALL my Windows 8 PC's.
The Folder Options are set to "Display file icon on thumbnails" and the Performance Options/Visual Effects are set to "Show thumbnails instead of icons".
I tried using the "Media Preview" program but it only works on about one in a hundred icons.
If it's happening on all my PC's it must be happening to others, any clue how to fix this?

Hello Bazzer, and welcome to Eight Forums.
Usually unless you are using either the
Windows Photo Viewer or the default
Photos app, thumbnail previews of image files may not work with the program you set as the default program even when you have thumbnail previews turned on.
To fix this, you'll need to set either program above as the default program with all of it's associations.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi Shawn and thanks for taking the time to reply.
I'd already tried making each program ... VLC, GOM and WMP the 'default' program but all it does is change all the icons to the icon used for that programs ... eg if I set it to VLC I just get lots of traffic cones in the folder instead of the thumbnails

You would need to make either Windows Photo Viewer or the usual default Photos app the default program instead. Those other programs don't seem to support thumbnails in Windows 8. At least not yet.

But those programs are nothing to do with avi and mpg files ... I've tried making Windows Media Player the default player and it's the same

Sorry about that. For AVI and MPG files, the Video app (Metro) is the normal default program instead.

I'm afraid that doesn't work either, I just get a folder full of the square purple icons, no thumbnails

I just did some testing with an .avi file with thumbnails turned on, and all I get is the icon as well with Video and WMP set as default. Seems there's an issue with thumbnails displaying for video files in Windows 8. It works just fine in Windows 7.

I had the same problem, both in Win 7 and Win 8.
K-Lite codec pack fixed it easily, and also drastically improved WMP's performance.
I've heard some say some very bad things about K-Lite.
It's all tosh. Never had a problem with it...

Hi Kat and thanks for your input but I'm afraid I already have the full K-Lite Codec Pack (9.40) installed and it made no difference. Having said that I'm unsure what settings should be made in K-Lite or if anything should be changed

Are you running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows?
If 64-bit, there is an extension pack for K-Lite, which may help.
