Windows 8 Media Center does not support Blu-Ray! :(

I am very disappointed to know that Windows 8 Media Center would not support Blu-ray. We would need third party software for this. So officially Microsoft is not supporting the Blu-ray format. This is really a disappointment as this shows that Microsoft is somehow moving away from the PCs (desktops/laptops) and going forward with the mobile devices. And the future of desktops and laptops are doomed. As a user of desktop, a few years ago I was looking forward to the Blu-ray era after the DVD era and was hoping that Games, software etc. would would soon be available in the Blu-ray format but it seems that Microsoft has decided to abandon desktops and laptops. Now I wish if there is some alternative OS to Windows! :(

Fees to include blu-ray support in their native player would have been expensive for microsoft, that is why it is not included.

One can download the free media center pack to get native dvd in windows 8.

One can also download free third party player VLC and the associated blu-ray libraries and get support for blu-ray in windows 8.

You do know that no other OS natively supports blue-ray either, right? Apple doesn't support it at all. You more or less have to rip a blue-ray disk in Linux to be able to play it.

To me this makes sense, no one freak out over this but bluray's are a walking dead technology IMO. I only say this in the sense as cloud technology gets better it puts bluray closer to being a dead business. Bluray still has better video quality but for many people this doesn't matter and those for who it does matter give it about another 5 years and the internet speeds will be high enough to get worthy HD out of videos you can buy or rent and no longer having to worry about scratch disc, losing disc or your three year old son using it as a shovel. This is just my opinion.

Especially since MS has a big investment in cloud video services on there xbox video.

I'm not too upset about it just one of those things that ill use while I can and if its a hardware component that came with your computer there should always be basic support via windows and Mac for it. This is the first hardware type system I have ever sen that you have to pay for its usage and drivers because of copyrights and such for personal/home usage.

The whole concept of digital media and the big company's getting raped by it is nuts. I have no problem renting a blue ray from red box for $1.50, but there is not way in hell I will ever pay $50 to buy the disc. The same is true for music CDs, DVD, etc. I know they want their money but what they are charging is insane. It costs what $.10 per disc to make, use cheap packaging, pay the creator, and the big company still gets a profit of 50% if they sell it for $10 bucks or so.

Amazon video rents had videos for $5.99 at its highest, and sells the digital media for $19.99 or so, which again is way overpriced.

So I will continue to rent the blurays for a buck fifty a night for as long as I can and trying to find the best support for the hardware.

It's corporate greed trying to make huge money like they used to off media. They have to bring their prices down for most people to truly start consuming it again. otherwise people tend to resort to piracy only because of the exorbitant pricing.

The reason for disappointment is the lack of official support for Blu-Ray in Windows 8. I think Blu-ray is still not a dead technology and a great format which deserved official support by Microsoft in their latest OS. If official support is extended to Blu-ray by MS Windows it can be a viable format for Games and software for the next ten years. Already there are games which are available in 6 or 8 DVDs. With Blu-Ray they can be released in one Blu-ray DVD. Blu-Ray can support games which require even more than 8 DVDs. Lack of official Blu-Ray support would hinder the development of larger games. MS should have moved one step forward with Windows 8; they have moved one step backwards. After DVDs, Blu-Ray DVDs should have been next. Of course we can still enable Blu-ray support in Windows 8 with third party software but an official support would have encouraged games and software developers to move forward with Blu-Ray. Windows needs Blu-Ray support as it is the mainstream operating system in the world. Its the most widely used OS in the world which Apple is not. Also with Linux its useless as it does not run games and software for Windows. We need native support in Windows for Blu-Ray.

I love Blu-ray and wish it was supported, but we'll have to deal with 3rd party it looks. That's fine, the licensing to add it to Windows would've added quite a bit of cost. The only reason I'd want it is if I get a 3d monitor before a TV on my PC anyway. So overall, it would be a nice addition, but not that important. My BD drive came with a player which worked well but I really didn't use it that much.

I didn't expect much since DVD-playback isn't supported, it's sad to know. I get the whole cloud thing but frankly I rather watch DVDs. Especially since I don't have fast internet.

The big step backwards for me is that people actually believe that streaming anything from the internet has acceptable quality, it doesn't and it's not even close to Blu-Ray, in fact it's not even close to DVD quality.

For this reason Blu-Ray isn't going anywhere and the cloud isn't even close to replacing it.

Hi there
did you really TRY VLC an install the video codecs.

What's even better is you can use a program like AnyDVD to strip of the regional and CSS decryption and then make an ISO image which W8 will mount as a Virtual ISO and you can play your movie.

I have literally 1000's of DVD ISO's copied to a 2 TB ext drive -- much better than physical DVD's.

Cheers
